Ryan Gosling Hilariously Debuts Project Hail Mary Trailer at CinemaCon; ‘I Put the Not in Astronaut’

You can count on Ryan Gosling to make you laugh! During the premiere of his new movie, Project Hail Mary, at CinemaCon, he certainly delivered with his witty one-liners. In this upcoming sci-fi film directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, Gosling leaves behind his ‘Kenergy’ to portray an astronaut.

According to Andy Weir’s hit novel, the movie centers around a former middle school teacher, now an unwilling astronaut named Ryland Grace (played by Gosling). The actor from Barbie jokingly mentioned that those at Amazon MGM Studios’ CinemaCon presentation were among the first to see the film—after his mother.

It became known that his persona was unwillingly dispatched into space, following his query to Sandra Hüller’s character regarding the mission. In a lighthearted manner, he quipped to the audience, “Astronauts perish in space? Who would volunteer for something like that?

Gosling jokingly said he’s the ‘not’ in astronaut since he’s never done a spacewalk, let alone a moonwalk,” Gosling added. Later on, his character ends up going to space and finds a solution to prevent a cosmic disaster from happening to Earth. Furthermore, Gosling shared that this film is intended for the cinema experience.

The production was so large that when they attempted to broadcast it on a television, it didn’t fit. Ryan Gosling’s remarks verified the studio’s dedication to a cinematic premiere, even though the content originated from a streaming service.

Mike Hopkins, who heads Amazon and MGM Studios, reinforced their commitment to a theatrical release for their upcoming project. Moreover, he mentioned that this was the first time they were presenting at CinemaCon.

Alongside Lord, Miller, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood, Rachel O’Connor, and Weir, Gosling is also involved in the production of the movie. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the trailer was accompanied by the tune of Harry Styles’ song Sign of the Times.

In a heart-pounding moment, I found myself sitting in a bustling classroom with the charismatic Ryan Gosling as our beloved teacher. But the tranquility was shattered when the enigmatic Eva Stratt (Hüller) strode towards him, her expression grave. Her words sent chills down my spine: “Earth is in peril, and we need a daring rescue mission.

Project Hail Mary will hit theaters on March 20, 2026.
