While many know Ryan Gosling from his upcoming film Project Hail Mary, he’s also joining the Star Wars universe in the new movie, Star Wars: Starfighter. This marks a shift for the actor, who has generally avoided long-term commitments to major franchises. Though he’s appeared in successful blockbusters like Barbie and Blade Runner 2049, he hasn’t previously reprised the same role. Gosling recently explained to Gizmodo why he decided to join the Star Wars franchise.

It seems Shawn Levy was the key to getting Gosling to change his mind about joining big franchises and agree to star in a Star Wars film.
Ryan Gosling says he chose to work on Project Hail Mary because of the story’s exciting vision, the great script, and the passion of the author, Shawn. He’d previously turned down other projects that didn’t feel right, and he’s happy he did, feeling this was a special opportunity and worth the wait, much like a truly great book.
It’s really exciting! Ryan Gosling seems genuinely invested in this project, and it’s clear he’s doing it for more than just the money. Fans have been waiting a long time for a new Star Wars movie – the last one, The Rise of Skywalker, came out in 2019. Now, with two films on the way, the wait is finally over. The dry spell ends with The Mandalorian and Grogu, hitting theaters on March 22, 2026, followed by Star Wars: Starfighter, which is already filmed and scheduled for 2027.
Ryan Gosling Gives Us Hope For Starfighter
Details about the upcoming Ryan Gosling-led Star Wars film are still limited, but we know it’s set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker. While it’s planned as a single, self-contained story, past experience with Star Wars suggests that could change. I’m optimistic about the movie, and I have faith in Ryan Gosling’s judgment that it will be excellent.
Levy and Gosling directed Star Wars: Starfighter, which features Mia Goth, Flynn Gray, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Fans are excited to see Gosling break his usual rule against joining franchises, as he seems perfectly suited for the Star Wars universe. Before that, he’ll be playing middle school teacher Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary, set to release in theaters on May 20, 2027.
