Ryan Coogler Teases His New X-Files Series

Filmmaker Ryan Coogler is working on a reboot of The X-Files, and he discussed some early details about the new series in a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

The new series will be structured like the original, featuring both self-contained episodes with individual monsters and a larger, season-long mystery, according to the filmmaker. “We’re planning to balance those two elements,” Coogler said.

Ryan Coogler announced in April that he would begin working on a new version of The X-Files after finishing his movie, Sinners. By October, development on the series was already underway. He shared that his mother, a big fan of the original series, played a role in his decision to take on the project.

The original X-Files was a huge success for Fox in the 1990s. The show followed FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully as they investigated bizarre and mysterious happenings.

Mulder readily accepted the possibility of the supernatural, but Scully approached things with doubt – a dynamic that was unusual for TV at the time. The show balanced self-contained, creepy adventures with a season-long investigation into hidden government secrets, creating a consistently exciting and intriguing experience for audiences.

Throughout its run, the show added new characters, including FBI agents John Doggett and Monica Reyes, and gave more focus to established characters like Assistant Director Walter Skinner. While the early seasons were filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, production later shifted to Los Angeles. However, Vancouver was used again for later seasons and the show’s movies.

It was a true cultural moment.

I’m really impressed with how the creator is handling this new version. It feels like he genuinely understands what people loved about the original – that perfect blend of unsettling, individual stories and the bigger, mysterious plot that tied everything together. He’s clearly aiming to honor that while also making it feel fresh and relevant for today’s audience.
