The next Avengers movie, currently titled Avengers: Doomsday, will be the fifth team-up film and the 39th movie overall in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with a script by Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, the film will unite heroes from across the Marvel world – including the Avengers, Wakandans, Fantastic Four, New Avengers, and X-Men – to battle the villain Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.
The film boasts a stellar cast of actors, including Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.
This project has been in development for a while. Following the July 2022 announcement of ‘The Kang Dynasty’ and ‘Secret Wars’ as the planned finale to Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Marvel Studios underwent some internal shifts.
Originally, Destin Daniel Cretton was going to direct ‘The Kang Dynasty,’ with Jonathan Majors returning as Kang the Conqueror and Jeff Loveness writing the script. However, Cretton stepped down, Aaron Waldron took over as writer, and Marvel ultimately decided to move away from the Kang storyline because of legal troubles involving Majors, which led to his dismissal.
Marvel announced in July 2024 that the Russo brothers would direct the new film, with Christopher McFeely co-writing the script and Robert Downey Jr. starring as Doctor Doom. Filming started in April at Pinewood Studios in England, and also took place in Bahrain. By September, production had finished, with many actors returning from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and X-Men films.
The next Avengers movie, titled Doomsday, is set to release in U.S. cinemas on December 18, 2026. A follow-up film, Secret Wars, is currently planned for release on December 17, 2027.
