Russell Crowe has expressed reservations about Gladiator 2, believing it lacks the strong moral center that defined the beloved 2000 film.
Russell Crowe recently told Triple J that what made the original Gladiator so impactful wasn’t the spectacle of its fights or sets, but the strong moral compass of his character, Maximus. He explained, “It wasn’t about the grandeur, the situation, or the action – it was the character’s strong moral center.”
Russell Crowe has voiced his disappointment with a plot twist in Gladiator 2. The film reveals that Paul Mescal’s character, Lucius, is secretly the son of Maximus, a connection not suggested in the original movie. Crowe believes this new storyline damages Maximus’s character, as it clashes with his established values and unwavering loyalty.
He remembered constantly having to protect Maximus’s strong moral compass during filming. He said it was a daily struggle to ensure the character stayed true to his principles. For example, they often had to push back against ideas for scenes involving romance or explicit content, as those would have gone against everything Maximus stood for.
He exclaimed, “Are you telling me he was having an affair while still married? That’s unbelievable!”

Ridley Scott is directing and producing Gladiator 2, which features Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. Derek Jacobi and Connie Nielsen are returning to their roles from the first Gladiator movie.
I’m really excited about this new story! It follows Lucius Verus Aurelius, a Roman prince who’s been forced into exile and now has to fight as a gladiator. But that’s not all – a former slave named Macrinus is secretly working on a plan to take down the emperors Caracalla and Geta! It sounds like a really intense power struggle is brewing.
Talk of making a sequel started way back in 2001, but the project faced several delays. One significant pause happened in 2006 when DreamWorks was acquired by Paramount.
The movie first premiered in Sydney on October 30, 2024, before being released in the UK and US the following November. Critics generally liked the film, and it made over $462 million around the world. It received Golden Globe nominations recognizing its cinematic success, box office performance, and Washington’s supporting acting role, and also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design.
