The poor performance of the movie Christy at the box office is still causing issues, and now actress Ruby Rose, who identifies as LGBTQ+, is publicly criticizing Sydney Sweeney.
Ruby Rose Slams Sweeney Over Christy
After the movie earned only $1.3 million in its opening weekend across over 2,000 theaters, the lead actress from Batwoman used the platform Threads to suggest that the actor Sweeney was responsible for the film’s poor performance.
Rose revealed she was initially cast as boxer Christy Martin in a previous version of the film and criticized Sweeney, claiming he compromised the movie’s quality.
The first draft of the Christy Martin script was amazing and really resonated with me. I was set to play the character Cherry, and a lot of the people involved deeply understood the story because many of us were part of the LGBTQ+ community. That connection is actually a big reason I continued pursuing acting, because losing out on roles is just part of the business.
Rose went on to attack Sweeney’s recent comments about making the movie “for the people,” saying:
Honestly, as a movie lover, it really bothered me seeing someone who clearly disliked the source material just…flaunt that while pretending to connect with it. It felt incredibly disingenuous. And frankly, the final product suffered because of it. I really think the character of Christy, and the story as a whole, deserved a much better treatment. It just didn’t work for me, and it felt like a real missed opportunity.

Okay, so right after saying that word, Rose quickly walked it back – she explained she didn’t know it could be considered offensive to people with disabilities. But honestly, instead of just apologizing, she swapped it out for an even harsher insult. It was a weird move, to say the least.
Wow, I didn’t realize ‘cretin’ is considered an ableist slur. I always thought it simply meant ‘creature’ historically. I apologize for using that word and should have just described the person as a psychopath instead.

Christy’s Box Office Struggles
David Michôd directed Christy, which was Black Bear’s first movie released widely in theaters. However, despite premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, it didn’t resonate with moviegoers.
Sweeney both stars in and produces the film, where she portrays boxing icon Christy Martin. Even though few people came to see it, Sweeney used Instagram to stand by the project, calling it the most meaningful work she’s ever done and highlighting its themes of resilience, bravery, and optimism.
We create art not just to reach a large audience, but to make a real difference. If our work inspires even one woman to begin seeking safety, we’ll consider it a success.

Controversy Around Sweeney
The criticism from Rose follows ongoing disapproval of Sydney Sweeney’s American Eagle advertisement and her support for Donald Trump. In a recent interview with GQ, Sweeney downplayed the controversy, stating she believes people will listen when she chooses to address an issue.
Reportedly, Sweeney’s politics are also clashing with her fellow Euphoria star, Zendaya.
