Rose Byrne was the star of the 2026 Golden Globes thanks to a funny and delightful acceptance speech. She won Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy for her performance in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, marking her first Golden Globe win.
Byrne seemed truly surprised when she won, admitting to the audience, “I really didn’t have a speech prepared.” She expressed her gratitude to the film’s writer and director, Mary Bronstein, and playfully mentioned the movie’s limited resources, saying, “We filmed it in about 25 days with a budget of practically nothing – maybe $8.50!”
She thanked her brother George, who was with her at the ceremony, and her parents, explaining they had subscribed to Paramount+ just to watch the Golden Globes while in Sydney.
Byrne playfully explained her partner, Bobby Cannavale, wasn’t able to attend because he was at a reptile show in New Jersey getting a new pet – a bearded dragon. She jokingly thanked him, which got a laugh from the crowd. Though they’ve been together since 2012 and have two sons, Byrne referred to Cannavale as her ‘husband’ during her speech, even though they aren’t legally married.

Cynthia Erivo (for Wicked: For Good), Kate Hudson (Song Sung Blue), Chase Infiniti (One Battle After Another), Amanda Seyfried (The Testament of Ann Lee), and Emma Stone (Bugonia) were also nominated in the same category as Byrne. Last year’s winner was Demi Moore for her role in The Substance.
Nikki Glaser hosted the Golden Globes ceremony, which took place at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. Viewers could watch the event live on CBS and stream it on Paramount+ with Showtime. The production company behind the Golden Globes, Dick Clark Productions, is owned by Penske Media Eldridge – a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge, the same company that owns The Hollywood Reporter.
Byrne’s speech was a refreshing change of pace during a very glamorous evening. She was funny and genuine, thanking everyone involved with the film in a way that made the audience both laugh and feel her gratitude.
