We’ve received some new details about the ongoing development of the live-action TV series, “God of War,” on Amazon Prime Video. The esteemed Ronald D. Moore has been appointed as the showrunner for this project. Moore is famous for his work on shows such as “Outlander,” “For All Mankind,” “Battlestar: Galactica,” and “Star Trek: Voyager.
The God of War series appears promising with Moore involved, but some comments made by him during an interview with Katee Sackhoff have sparked curiosity among gamers. Fans might not be unjustified in their apprehension since Hollywood has had mixed results when adapting video games, and Amazon isn’t known for its exceptional adaptations of IPs either.
What did Ron Moore say?
What has fans concerned is that Moore said he’s not a gamer:
Currently, I’m engaged in reworking a popular video game titled “God of War”. This game is well-known in the gaming community, and Amazon has commissioned not one but two seasons based on it. As a result, I’ve been invited to contribute to the writing process, so at the moment, you can find me in the writer’s room, working diligently on this new project. That’s my latest endeavor.
Sackhoff is familiar with the game and points out “that’s such a daunting property.”
“Yeah [shrugs], and I’m not a gamer, so it’s even more like ‘Okay ,I’ve never done this before.’”
Sackhoff then questions if he tried to play the game.
Although I’ve given it a shot, I should clarify that I’m not a regular gamer. You might recall the arcade games we used to play back then – inserting coins and vigorously pressing buttons. So, in essence, I can handle that. I can play Defender or Asteroids, but let me make it clear that my gaming experience is more rooted in the old-school arcade era.
Currently, the control panel requires you to… Press the R1 button. Wait a moment, which one is R1? Darn it all… I still can’t believe it [chuckles].
Should fans be concerned?
It’s causing some worry among fans that Ron Moore doesn’t consider himself a gamer, yet he added that his spouse is an avid gamer who has spent the last fifteen years immersed in playing Skyrim.
As someone who isn’t well-versed in gaming, I can still appreciate the appeal of God of War. Here’s hoping that Sean Bean, with his knack for delivering captivating performances on screen, doesn’t disappoint the dedicated fans of this iconic game series.
What is God of War about?
The narrative of the live-action Amazon show is yet to be disclosed, but the God of War video game saga revolves around Kratos, a Spartan soldier who finds himself embroiled in the lives of gods, monstrous creatures, and legendary worlds.
Initially rooted in Greek mythology, the initial installments of this game series revolve around Kratos’ quest for vengeance against the Olympian deities, particularly Ares and Zeus, following his betrayal into murdering his own kin. Driven by fury and grief, Kratos mercilessly battles gods, titans, and monstrous creatures in fierce combat.
In the latest installments of the game, the narrative moves towards Norse folklore, featuring an older, more contemplative Kratos who resides with his son Atreus. Following the passing of Atreus’ mother, they set out on a journey to fulfill her last request—to have her ashes spread at the summit of the highest peak across all realms. During their voyage, they encounter gods from Norse mythology such as Baldur, Thor, and Odin, forcing Kratos to grapple with his past violence while attempting to lead Atreus towards a more righteous path.
The next God of War game is said to involve Egyptian gods.
