In the ’90s, one of the more unusual studio comedies is set to have a continuation. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, it seems that Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion is officially getting a sequel, with the original stars Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow reprising their roles. The initial film, which centered around two underachieving women who fabricated their successes at their 10-year high school reunion, was a modest box office hit in 1997. However, it gained a significant following on home video and television. Over the years, talks of a sequel circulated, and now it appears that production is finally underway. The original film has since become a cult favorite.
In the latest update, Tim Federle, known for his work on “High School Musical: The Series,” has been tapped to direct the upcoming sequel for Twentieth Century Studios. Preliminary plans suggest filming might commence in June, potentially taking place in Los Angeles. Both Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow will serve as executive producers. While specifics about the plot are under wraps, rumors hint at a release timing that could coincide with Romy and Michele’s 40th high school reunion. Given their history of telling tall tales, this time around, they might need to come up with something more impressive than claiming credit for Post-Its. Perhaps they could claim invention of social media instead?
Numerous actors from the original Romy and Michele movie have had successful Hollywood careers since, such as Justin Theroux, Alan Cumming, and Kristin Bauer, known for her roles in True Blood and Once Upon a Time. Interestingly, Bauer was part of “The A-Group” of mean girls in the first film. It would be quite exciting if these actors could return, even for brief appearances, in the potential sequel. Additionally, it would be wonderful if Janeane Garofalo, who played an important role in the original, could reprise her character in some capacity. Fingers crossed that the Romy and Michele sequel lives up to expectations as one of the rare comedy legacy films that does not disappoint.
