Rodent-Borne Virus Linked to Gene Hackman’s Wife’s Death Claims Three More Lives in California; Find Out Here

The virus that led to the passing of Betsy Hackman, wife of renowned actor Gene Hackman, has now taken three more lives in California. Tragically, both Betsy and Gene were found deceased in their New Mexico residence on February 26th. Subsequent investigations revealed that Betsy had contracted hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), which ultimately caused her death. Concerningly, similar instances have surfaced in the town of Mammoth Lakes, sparking health-related worries among the public.

On Thursday, April 3rd, Mono County Health and Human Services Public Health Division reported a third fatality linked to hantavirus in Mammoth Lakes, a town approximately 330 miles east of San Francisco. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advises that the hantavirus is mainly transmitted through interaction with infected rodents, primarily by coming into contact with their urine, droppings, and saliva, although bites or scratches can also spread the virus.

Dr. Tom Boo, the Public Health Officer of Mono County, described the recent death as both sad and concerning. He shared that although the deceased person’s home showed no signs of rodent presence, mice were discovered in their workplace – a circumstance not unusual during this time of year in Mammoth Lakes. Importantly, none of the three victims participated in activities typically linked to increased risk, implying that everyday life might conceal hidden risks.

On March 7th, Heather Jarrell, the chief medical examiner of New Mexico, officially declared that Betsy Hackman had died due to HPS. Conversely, Gene Hackman’s cause of death was determined to be severe heart disease, high blood pressure, and advanced Alzheimer’s.
