Robert Pattinson has moved past the persistent critiques of the “Twilight” series and isn’t shy about expressing his feelings. Recently, he voiced his annoyance regarding continuous criticism about the film franchise which catapulted him to fame as Edward Cullen.
Pattinson commented, ‘It’s funny when people continue to say, “Twilight really messed up the vampire genre,”‘. He seems puzzled, asking, ‘Are you still hung up on that old stuff? Can’t you get over something that happened nearly 20 years ago?’ It’s quite surprising.
The “Twilight” saga, initially released in 2008 and concluding in 2012, swept through pop culture and garnered a staggering $3 billion at the box office. Despite its tremendous popularity, the movies received significant criticism, mostly concerning their portrayal of vampires and the intense love triangle involving Edward Cullen, Bella Swan (portrayed by Kristen Stewart), and Jacob Black (played by Taylor Lautner).
In an interview with GQ in 2022, Robert Pattinson explained that his unique portrayal of Edward sometimes clashed with the studio’s expectations. He revealed that he strived to give the character an artistic flair, a decision that almost led to losing the role.
According to Pattinson, the studio expressed apprehension about making the character too emotional. He believed this was the appropriate approach for the role, as he spent a significant amount of time feeling frustrated… I can hardly believe some of the actions I took half the time. Furthermore, his managers advised him to smile more or risk losing his job.
Although the ride was rough at times, Pattinson’s performance as Edward made a deep impact on fans, and the series continues to be a significant part of popular culture.
Simultaneously, Taylor Lautner expressed his thoughts on the Twilight craze during a 2023 episode of Call Her Daddy. Lautner admitted that the tension between “Team Edward” and “Team Jacob” sometimes made situations uncomfortable for him. He reminisced about instances where the fans’ polarized reactions had an emotional impact on him.
Lautner found it difficult, considering his youthful years. Occasionally, he admitted, his feelings would be wounded unnecessarily, but it’s tough not to feel that way. Regardless, he conveyed his appreciation for the franchise and the doors it opened for him.
He stated, “Following the conclusion of the franchise, I embarked on a journey to discover my true identity. Yet, I’m incredibly grateful for the experience the franchise offered me.
Speaking of Pattinson, he’s left his days on “Twilight” behind and is now tackling daring new characters. His upcoming major production is “Mickey 17,” directed by Bong Joon Ho, scheduled for release in March. In this sci-fi film focused on space exploration, Pattinson will play Mickey Barnes.
When questioned about collaborating with the renowned director of “Parasite”, Pattinson replied, “Bong Joon Ho is absolutely unique and unparalleled.
