Robert Kirkman Teases ‘Invincible’ Season 4 with Unused Comic Story Where Mark Battles the Devil

In the realm of ‘Invincible,’ significant events are unfolding. The third season has concluded with a thrilling finale, and creator Robert Kirkman is offering tantalizing glimpses into what lies ahead. The intriguing speculation revolves around Mark Grayson, voiced by Steven Yeun, potentially venturing to the depths of hell to confront Satan himself in Season 4. Yes, you’ve heard correctly—it seems Mark will be delivering a powerful punch directly to the devil’s face!

Let’s rewind a bit. The season finale saw an epic battle between Mark and a Viltrumite called Conquest (voice by Jeffrey Dean Morgan). This guy was ruthless, shattering Mark through a crowded beach and causing havoc everywhere. It was gruesome, it was thrilling, and we couldn’t look away. Eve, portrayed by Gillian Jacobs, emerged from a coma with a robotic leg and stepped in to help, but Conquest didn’t spare her—he tore her jaw off and made a hole through her. Oliver, character played by Christian Convery, also suffered a dental injury. In the end, Mark and Eve joined forces to crack open Conquest’s skull, but there’s a twist—Cecil Stedman, acted by Walton Goggins, kept the body for some covert Viltrum research. Clever trick, Cecil.

In an intriguing development revealed during a conversation with Variety by Kirkman of Skybound Entertainment, a fascinating tidbit was dropped about the post-credits scene. The character of Damien Darkblood, the demon detective known for his voice by Clancy Brown, reappeared in hell following his absence since Season 1. He’s currently engaged in conversation with a sinister figure voiced by none other than Bruce Campbell, a renowned figure from ‘Evil Dead’. It appears they are scheming to bring someone from the surface down into the underworld, and I have a hunch that character could be Mark.

Kirkman hinted that an untouched storyline from the comic books may be explored in Season 4 of “Invincible.” Typically, superhero tales include a sequence where the hero ventures to hell to battle the devil, which is a significant event in both DC and Marvel comics. So far, this concept has not been implemented in “Invincible,” but it seems as though that might change with Season 4, making me excited for what’s to come.

Kirkman has a talent for keeping us guessing. He even mentioned the Conquest fight, referring to it as the ‘Monaco sequence.’ His aim was to surpass the Season 1 train scene with Omni-Man. “That was indeed a goal,” he stated. “When I was writing that episode, I was very conscious of the fact that the Nolan fight had set a high standard for the series and I wanted to raise the bar as much as possible.” It’s evident he’s taking ‘Invincible’ to new peaks, and it shows—Season 3 felt like a thrilling rollercoaster ride.

There’s also additional intrigue to it. Jeffrey Dean Morgan portraying Conquest? That’s a reunion from ‘The Walking Dead’ with Steven Yeun, who once played Glenn opposite Morgan’s Negan. Kirkman confessed, “When he began appearing on ‘The Boys,’ I couldn’t let Eric Kripke enjoy it all by himself.” He was thrilled at the prospect of a rematch where Glenn—or rather, Mark—secures the victory this time around. Interestingly enough, last week’s episode featured Aaron Paul and Jonathan Banks from ‘Breaking Bad,’ but Kirkman insists that encounter was purely coincidental.

Mark is rapidly maturing, as evidenced by his vow to retaliate against anyone who harms his family, following his belief that he had killed Angstrom Levy earlier in Season 3. Kirkman noted, “This character deeply regretted what he believed was the murder of Angstrom Levy because he felt it made him more like his father.” However, by the end of the season, Mark seems prepared to engage in violent actions, despite doubts about Conquest’s potential survival. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Angstrom Levy, Battle Beast, and those unsettling Sequids are all still alive and potentially causing more problems.

Looks like we can expect Season 4 of the show in 2026! Robert Kirkman has hinted that it will follow the same pace as Seasons 2 and 3. The production company, Skybound, seems to be moving at a swift pace with Amazon’s support. Also, the main antagonist, Thragg, has been cast, and Kirkman is excited about the actor chosen for the role, calling him ‘amazing’. It remains to be seen who will play this significant character, but it’s safe to assume they are a well-known figure in the industry.

Regarding the enigma surrounding Bruce Campbell’s character in Kirkman’s series – he’s being secretive about it. When asked if Campbell will face off against Satan, Kirkman replied with a cryptic “Perhaps it’s the devil. Perhaps not. We’ll find out soon enough.” If this turns out to be true, it would mark a dramatic departure from the comics, as Damien Darkblood never ventured into hell. Kirkman is fond of the character and Clancy Brown’s gruff voice has won him many fans. Combine that with Campbell’s magnetic charisms, and Season 4 could present Mark with his most thrilling fight yet. I’m eagerly anticipating how this unfolds!
