Robert Eggers Reveals How Bill Skarsgård Influenced the Ending of ‘Nosferatu’

As a seasoned gamer and cinephile with over three decades of watching horror films under my belt, I eagerly anticipate the release of the modern take on F.W. Murnau’s classic “Nosferatu” on December 25, 2024. The original film has been a staple in my horror movie collection, and I can’t wait to see how Robert Eggers and his star-studded cast breathe new life into this iconic tale.

The iconic Expressionist movie “Nosferatu,” one of cinema’s most influential films, was skillfully directed by F.W. Murnau back in 1922. Max Schreck brilliantly played the role of Count Orlok in this classic. On December 25, 2024, a modernized adaptation of the original German masterpiece will hit the screens, marking a century and two years since its initial release.

Murnau’s movie has been a source of inspiration for many filmmakers, including independent director Robert Eggers, who is reimagining this German masterpiece for contemporary audiences. The role of Count Orlok in this adaptation will be played by horror veteran Bill Skarsgård.

In a fresh interpretation of “Dracula,” author Eggers deviates from Stoker’s novel narrative. Instead of adhering strictly to the original film, he plans to rework the ending, and it’s been disclosed that Bill Skarsgård’s input had an impact on these story alterations.

Speaking of the film, Eggers is in charge of directing it. Alongside Skarsgård portraying Count Orlok, we’ve got Nicholas Hoult stepping into the role of Thomas Hutter, Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Friedrich Harding, Emma Corrin as Anna Harding, Willem Dafoe taking on Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, Simon McBurney as Herr Knock, and Ralph Ineson as Dr. Wilhelm Sievers.

The film underwent numerous production challenges and actor swaps prior to its creation, and though the journey was arduous, we’re thrilled to know that we’ll be able to watch it shortly.

During an interview with SFX Magazine, Eggers shared that Skarsgård altered the movie’s finale by uncovering a hidden vulnerability within the typically malevolent character of Orlok.

I sent (Skarsgard) a backstory of Orlok that I wrote. So we came to it together to achieve what I was after. Because I’m so tired of the heroic and sad vampires, I was just like, ‘He’s a demon. He’s so evil.’

Bill suggested that there should be moments when his character appears vulnerable, even though it’s not a common occurrence and is quite subtle. This added depth makes the ending of the movie more impactful than it would have been without these nuances, while still maintaining the image of a powerful, intimidating vampire.

Even though you’re already familiar with the original, there are still some unexpected twists yet to uncover, which makes us quite eager to find out how Eggers and the cast chose to interpret this timeless tale and if their rendition will live up to its reputation as a solid remake.

With Eggers at the helm, we can certainly anticipate a film that’s both diligently crafted and dedicated, and that alone should be satisfying enough.

Before we close this article, here is the official synopsis of the upcoming movie:

In this iconic, chilling silent movie, the enigmatic Count Orlok requests a visit from Thomas Hutter to his ominous Transylvanian castle nestled in the mountains. The unsettling Orlok intends to purchase a property close to Hutter and his wife, Ellen.
