As a seasoned film enthusiast and someone who has witnessed the ebb and flow of the cinematic landscape for decades, I must admit that Robert Eggers‘ ‘Nosferatu’ (2024) has left an indelible mark on my heart. This gothic horror masterpiece is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling, a labor of love that spanned over a decade in its creation.
Having followed Eggers’ career since his critically acclaimed debut ‘The Witch’ (2015), I was both captivated and inspired by his unwavering determination to bring this passion project to life. The tale of Count Orlok, expertly portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, is a chilling reminder that some stories are timeless, transcending the boundaries of time and language.
The film’s success, despite initial doubts and setbacks, serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring filmmakers everywhere, demonstrating that perseverance, vision, and the right timing can turn dreams into reality. In the words of Eggers himself, “It just happened to be at the right time.”
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go rewatch ‘The Witch’ and prepare myself for whatever eerie delights await in ‘Nosferatu 2: The Count Cometh.’ And maybe, just maybe, I’ll find a way to convince Eggers to adapt ‘Frankenstein’ next—who knows, it might only take him another decade or so!
2024’s ‘Nosferatu’ is a chilling horror production helmed by Robert Eggers. This modern rendition is inspired by the 1922 silent film of the same name, itself adapted from Bram Stoker’s classic novel ‘Dracula.’ The star-studded cast includes Bill Skarsgård in the titular role as Count Orlok, while Nicholas Hoult and Lily-Rose Depp portray the Hutter couple in this reimagining.
As a huge fan, let me share that this film boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney, and Willem Dafoe. This movie, in a unique twist, became an unexpected holiday sensation. On the chilly evening of December 2, 2024, Nosferatu graced the silver screen for its premiere in Berlin, Germany. Stateside audiences could catch it on Christmas Day, December 25, 2024, while international viewers had to wait until New Year’s Day, January 1, 2025.
In its debut, the film surpassed expectations by raking in an impressive total of $21.7 million during its first weekend. Initially predicted to earn approximately $25 million over this period, it actually grossed more than expected. On the first day, it earned $11.55 million and followed up with $7.6 million on the second day. These figures led to revised projections of around $42 million for its opening weekend. However, the movie went on to generate a substantial amount over five days, amassing a total of $40.8 million, ultimately placing third at the box office.
So far, the movie has been successful, but as Eggers disclosed, the journey to that success was lengthy and challenging. The concept for ‘Nosferatu’ originated in 2015, when Eggers intended it to be his second film, a project he was deeply passionate about. However, he eventually opted to postpone its production.
Recently, director Robert Eggers discussed the challenging process of breathing life into ‘Nosferatu’. He revealed that it required almost a decade to eventually see the film come to fruition.
Over the past decade, I’ve been striving to bring this film to life, but it’s disintegrated a few times along the way. The last time it crumbled seemed like an insurmountable obstacle, and I was content with the idea that it might never materialize. In those moments, I contemplated focusing on creating original works exclusively.
At first, Eggers felt that re-creating a movie as iconic as ‘Nosferatu’ might not be wise. He proposed another script instead, but it didn’t get accepted. Later on, he presented the idea of Nosferatu to Peter Kujawski at Focus Features, and it proved successful since it was the perfect moment for such a project.
Refashioning such a well-known piece feels unappetizing. Time has moved on. However, I had another script that I pitched, but no one was interested in producing it. Then I approached Peter Kujawski at Focus Features and suggested “Nosferatu.” He agreed, which was perfect timing for us. Let’s embark on this new journey now.
