Robert Downey Jr. Was Supposed to Make a Cameo in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ But Was Eventually Scrapped When He Got Cast as Dr. Doom

As a long-time Marvel fan who has witnessed the rise and fall (and rise again) of Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and disappointment over this latest turn of events.

One of the most buzzed-about topics in entertainment circles at the moment, justifiably so, is Robert Downey Jr.’s comeback to the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Marvel’s revelation at San Diego Comic-Con has sent fans into a frenzy, with everyone discussing Downey and the potential future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which once again looks promising.

Prior to the decision that led to Jonathan Majors’ dismissal as Kang, a turn of events that eventually resulted in Marvel opting not to continue with Kang and replacing Majors, Downey’s future in the MCU looked significantly different. Initially, his comeback was planned in an entirely distinct manner.

It has been disclosed that Robert Downey Jr. had initially planned to make a cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine, but following his selection for Doctor Doom, this prospect was eventually abandoned and Downey did not feature in the worldwide blockbuster currently captivating audiences!

During an exclusive chat with IndieWire, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick shared intriguing behind-the-scenes tidbits about the film’s production. One of the most captivating pieces of news that emerged from this interview is the disclosure that initially, Robert Downey Jr. was intended to make a surprise appearance in the movie; however, these plans were altered when the writers discovered Doctor Doom was on the horizon.

Was it your intention to include Robert Downey Jr. alongside Jon Favreau (as Happy Hogan) in the specified scene, or were you aware during the script-writing process that he would be portraying Doctor Doom instead?

Initially, we planned for him to make a brief appearance. The original script featured Robert Downey Jr. and Happy in that particular scene.

Rhett Reese: We aimed to have Robert Downey Jr. join Ryan Reynolds in a scene, hoping for his participation. Yet, we also desired Jon Favreau, as they make an excellent pair, and both were part of the same scene.

Wernick: Backstage, we were unaware of the Doctor Doom situation. It seemed impossible for him to take on two roles. Then we thought, “Surely Downey wouldn’t refuse Ryan Reynolds, would he? After all, no one ever says ‘no’ to Ryan Reynolds.” Ryan put the pressure on him. We wrote the scenes and had Downey read them, but what we didn’t realize was that Doctor Doom plan was already in motion behind the curtains.

The writers also revealed some details about his role:

Since we’ll never see Downey in “Deadpool & Wolverine,” what was going to be his role or punchline?

In simpler terms, Reese is saying that the scene they portrayed was similar to what you witnessed in the movie, as one character (in this case, Wade) was rejected by another (not specified). The reason given was that he wasn’t a good team player and his abilities were questioned. The scene had two characters instead of one, and Jon Favreau was involved from the beginning. They would have preferred Robert Downey Jr., but they believed Marvel had a secret plan – to bring back Downey as a different character after Doctor Doom appeared. So, having Downey play Tony Stark in this situation didn’t fit with that plan.

We hadn’t put it into words earlier, but there was a scene concept where the Avengers were present. In this version, Deadpool was initially turned away, and then he scolded the Avengers in his distinctive manner.)

Reese: He was about to become quite angry and lash out at all of them in a harsh, aggressive manner.
