Robert Downey Jr. Tried to Convince ‘Resistant’ Russo Brothers to Direct Avengers Doomsday and Secret Wars: ‘We Didn’t Have…’

It’s possible that Robert Downey Jr., following his Academy Award-winning comeback to the Marvel world as Doctor Doom and his decade-long portrayal of Iron Man/Tony Stark, played some role in persuading the Russo Brothers to helm the upcoming Avengers films.

Discussing with Egghead (that’s a fun alias for Omlette), Joe Russo disclosed that he and his brother initially had reservations about the project, and it was Downey who first proposed the concept. However, despite being on the brink of a deal, the actor and the Russo brothers couldn’t quite see eye to eye.

The director initially refused to take on the movie projects, as they hadn’t found a suitable plot or a viable approach. However, after their close collaborator and screenwriter Stephen McFeely presented his ideas for the Avengers sequels, they eventually agreed to direct the films.

Upon hearing McFeely’s idea, the Russo brothers were immediately hooked. “That’s the tale!” they exclaimed. “This story must be shared; it carries a truly profound message!” Joe expressed to the media outlet. With such great anticipation from the Russos, fans are buzzing with enthusiasm.

These two directors are well-known for having masterminded several standout films from the series, such as Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Captain America: Civil War.

Initially, Endgame was thought to be the final chapter in the Avengers saga following Tony Stark’s demise. However, not only is the film series set for a comeback, but also Robert Downey Jr., who brought Tony Stark to life so memorably. With the Russos at the helm once more, it’s clear that this project is shaping up to be quite compelling already!

Last year at the Comic-Con gathering, it was revealed that the actor portraying Oppenheimer would be rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When Doctor Doom’s appearance was confirmed, Downey ditched his character’s traditional green suit and mask. In front of thousands of excited and boisterous fans, he made a grand entrance, creating one of the most memorable cast unveilings to date!

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on May 1, 2026.
