Robert Downey Jr. Reveals His Biggest Regret About Leaving Iron Man Role

As a lifestyle expert with an extensive background in Hollywood and celebrity culture, I must say that Robert Downey Jr.’s journey from Iron Man to Doctor Doom is nothing short of captivating. Having witnessed his career evolution firsthand, it’s fascinating to see how he grapples with the consequences of playing one iconic character for so long.

Following years of portraying Iron Man in numerous Marvel films, renowned Hollywood actor Robert Downey Jr. took on a new character in Christopher Nolan’s 2023 Academy Award-winning film Oppenheimer. Now, as he returns to the Marvel realm by assuming the role of the famous supervillain Doctor Doom, Downey Jr. discusses his biggest regrets about letting go of his cherished Tony Stark character.

Following a career marked by various highs and lows, Downey achieved a fresh stratum of fame in 2008 when he secured the role of Stark within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At that time, it was uncertain whether the film would prosper or if Marvel Studios’ bet on the Avengers franchise would prove profitable. Yet, the franchise and his character have undeniably become a worldwide phenomenon.

Through his performance, he contributed significantly to one of the most iconic franchises and endeared himself to many fans, making Marvel struggle in the wake of Stark’s demise. However, one must ponder how it feels for Downey to have portrayed the character for years and then say farewell to it. In his own words to the New York Times magazine, “It makes you question if a part of yourself hasn’t grown weak.”

As someone deeply invested in the character I play, I’ve often pondered about the potential impact on my career from portraying one role for an extended period. When asked about this, I admitted that there was a time when Christopher Nolan suggested branching out, exercising different acting muscles, all while temporarily stepping away from my familiar comfort zones.

After a long stint as Iron Man, the actor ventured into his initial substantial role outside of Marvel, which unfortunately became the disappointing film “Dolittle.” Downey Jr., who had envisioned this project to be his shining star, anticipated it would evolve into a “large, enjoyable, well-crafted potential series” as he felt he was invincible and the master of all genre films at that time. He later referred to the movie as a “two-and-a-half-year ordeal of missed opportunity.” However, things did not unfold as planned.

Later on, Downey Jr. received a call from Nolan, who wanted him to portray the malicious Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. After winning an Academy Award for his portrayal, Downey’s character was seen nursing a long-standing grudge against Cillian Murphy’s J. Robert Oppenheimer. Having spent years playing Marvel’s Stark, the actor admitted that he felt hesitant about taking on such a role. As he put it, Stark relied on his usual tricks like rapid-fire dialogue, charisma, unpredictability, and so forth. In the words of his close friend and fellow actor Josh Richman, Downey had built his career playing “Milo, the eccentric sidekick.”

Ultimately, Oppenheimer managed to spark a strong desire within him to tackle the task, one that would leave him without any support systems. It seems the gamble was worth it, given the film’s massive box-office earnings and the unquenchable interest of fans worldwide, despite his character being incredibly gloomy and grey.
