At a breakfast event hosted by The Hollywood Reporter in Beverly Hills, Robert Downey Jr. playfully teased Gwyneth Paltrow.
I was really touched to see him there supporting her as she got the Sherry Lansing Leadership Award. He said all the right things, of course, but he couldn’t resist playfully teasing her about how she still doesn’t quite get what’s going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was a sweet, funny moment, honestly.
Robert Downey Jr. revealed that Gwyneth Paltrow has repeatedly forgotten details about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even while filming. He recounted an instance where she didn’t recognize a fellow actor, specifically asking Downey who Tom Holland was despite having shared scenes with him on multiple occasions.
I remember her asking who that was. Robert Downey Jr. said he told her, ‘That’s Spider-Man. He said his name is Peter – that’s his character’s name, and he’s Tom Holland. You’ve worked with him on four movies!’
Following the joke, Robert Downey Jr. praised Gwyneth Paltrow’s dedication, explaining that she impressively balanced running her company, Goop, with raising her children and maintaining her acting career – often while on set during breaks from filming Iron Man.
Gwyneth Paltrow and Robert Downey Jr. starred as Pepper Potts and Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from the first Iron Man in 2008 through Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Despite their long history with the franchise, Paltrow has repeatedly gone viral for forgetting key details about Marvel movies—even ones she appeared in.
She starred alongside Tom Holland in several Marvel films, including The Avengers, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
