Robert Downey Jr. Posts Pic of Recent DOOM Comic, a Possible AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY Clue?

The filming for “Avengers: Doomsday” has started, and its lead actor, Robert Downey Jr., is giving glimpses of the set through social media posts. No major spoilers though, mainly photos with his co-stars. His latest update, as reported by Collider, features Downey’s “Doom workstation necessities.” The items labeled as necessities were mostly a Tate’s Bakeshop latte, tissues, and such. But one item hinted at his portrayal of Doctor Doom – a copy of Marvel Comics’ “Doom” one-shot from last year, written by Sanford Greene and Jonathan Hickman. You can find Downey’s post below:

From analyzing the comic book shared by Robert Downey Jr on his post, we can infer some insights. Given the wealth of excellent Dr. Doom comics spanning over 60 years, why pick one that’s barely a year old? The comic’s official description reveals: “With Valeria Richards at his side, Doom embarks on a mission to amass power unprecedented by any human, aiming to prevent Galactus from causing the universe’s demise.” This plotline seems fitting for Victor von Doom’s storyline in the upcoming film, although it’s possible that Valeria Richards may be replaced with her brother, Franklin.

Jonathan Hickman, a renowned co-writer of Doom, has significantly impacted the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Much of Thanos’ character development and many of his minions in Infinity War and Endgame were inspired by Hickman’s work. Moreover, the concept of Multiversal incursions, which originated from Hickman’s Avengers storyline “Time Runs Out,” is likely to be a significant influence on Avengers: Secret Wars. Given that Hickman’s 2015 version of Secret Wars may have more impact than the original, it’s safe to say Robert Downey Jr. is referring to top-tier material when developing his portrayal of Marvel’s formidable antagonist, Victor von Doom.
