Shawn Levy recently posted Instagram photos from a dedication ceremony at the University of Southern California. The event celebrated the official naming of the Kevin Feige Division of Film & Television Production.
The event honored Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and a USC graduate, and attracted many prominent figures from Hollywood, such as Robert Downey Jr. and Ryan Coogler. Director Shawn Levy shared that he was thrilled to support his friend Kevin and celebrate his contributions to their university. He also mentioned enjoying conversations with Kevin, Ryan Coogler, and everyone who attended the successful event.
The evening featured a candid discussion with Feige, Coogler, and Levy, covering topics like navigating Hollywood, how Marvel develops its stories, and the experiences that influenced their careers.
You know, as a huge movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the online reaction to films, but Kevin Feige – the guy behind the MCU – recently talked about how they avoid getting sucked into it all. He explained there are endless theories on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Reddit, and honestly, it’s easy to get lost in it all and start second-guessing things. He said they deliberately choose not to read all that stuff, because they really want to focus on making the best movie possible, rather than getting distracted by the online chatter. It’s a smart approach, really – stay focused on the art!

Levy explained that when working on large franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, it’s important to step back, disconnect, and reconnect with your original vision and creative voice.
We also talked about test screenings, and honestly, it sounded pretty stressful! Kevin Feige described how terrifying it is to show a rough cut after pouring nearly $200 million into a film, only to have the audience completely baffled. And Shawn Levy totally agreed – he said you basically panic, feel awful, and then just have to get back to work and fix things. It’s a good reminder that even at that level, making a movie is a huge risk!
The filmmakers discussed choosing directors for Marvel movies and TV shows. Kevin Feige explained that finding someone he connected with was crucial. He said, “It was almost more important that I felt a good rapport with a director and could imagine working closely with them for the next couple of years, than what they’d done before.”
I have to admit, hearing Ryan Coogler talk about seeing the first Iron Man back in 2008 was really special. He shared this great story about almost getting locked out of the theater, and then spotting Kevin Feige, Robert Downey Jr., and Jon Favreau rocking Stark Industries jackets – talk about commitment! But beyond the fun details, he described the actual movie as pure magic, especially because he’d just moved to L.A. and was feeling like he was exactly where he needed to be. It really highlighted the impact that film had on a lot of people. We also got a peek behind the scenes of Deadpool & Wolverine, with talk of how crucial Hugh Jackman’s involvement was to shaping the story.
It felt wonderful to think about the people we take for granted and realize how much we actually cherish them.
The discussion became more heartfelt when Feige and Coogler spoke about the death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020. Feige recalled working with Boseman on the animated series What If…? and how deeply his loss was felt. He stated, “We were always planning to continue,” and admitted he hadn’t realized how much he relied on their ongoing creative partnership.
Coogler explained that a visit to Chadwick Boseman’s home during the COVID-19 lockdown felt deeply personal. He emphasized it wasn’t a discussion about the future of the Black Panther franchise, but rather a genuine check-in on Boseman’s well-being. He described it as a moment that highlighted the human connection beyond the business and financial pressures of the film industry.
Coogler realized something important from the experience: “There was only one actor, Michael B. Jordan, who could truly play that role.”
