In a recent disclosure, Robert De Niro’s daughter, Ariane, shared that she identifies as transgender. Drawing on the strength of the trailblazing women who have inspired her, and acknowledging her unique racial background, Ariane spoke with pride and gratitude about her transition process.

Recently, Airyn discussed her experience transitioning and adopting a fresh identity in an interview with Them magazine. She expressed her passion for promoting mental health understanding and supporting underrepresented groups. Furthermore, she was open about her upbringing and her professional ambitions.

Airyn expressed, “It’s one thing to be noticed and quite another to truly be understood. I’ve managed to grab attention, but I believe I haven’t been fully perceived yet,” she shared with the media outlet.

She went on to say, “A significant aspect of (my transformation) stems from the impact Black women have had on me. By embracing this new persona and feeling even prouder of my African-American heritage, I somehow feel a stronger connection with them.

Airyn additionally discussed the recent media portrayals that didn’t accurately represent her. She admitted, “It seemed to bring home the point that many people actually have very little understanding of who I am.

Despite her father being well-known, Airyn shared that she spent her childhood out of the public eye. Her parents made a conscious effort to give her and her brother Julian a typical, peaceful upbringing, shielding them from the stresses of Hollywood life.

Airyn emphasized that she didn’t grow up like a ‘nepo baby’, with her life not centered around movie productions or red carpet events. Instead, she highlighted that her father encouraged them to chart their unique paths in life. She strongly asserted her determination to achieve success based on her individual merits, separate from any celebrity lineage.

Airyn recalled the challenges of not quite fitting into specific social or cultural norms. From concerns about her physical appearance to questions about her racial identity, she was often told that she fell short in one way or another. In late 2023, Airyn began hormone therapy. Her hope is to serve as an inspiration for those who feel marginalized or overlooked.

Airyn expressed a desire to potentially serve as an inspiration for another individual who is Black, queer, and not size extra small. She hopes to see an increase in visibility of trans women and Black women who may be larger-bodied or don’t conform to the typical thin or “heroin chic” standard.

Robert De Niro, aged 81, is a father of seven children. He and actress Toukie Smith have two children together: Airyn and her twin brother, Julian.
