Actor Robert Carradine, famous for his work in films like The Long Riders and Revenge of the Nerds, as well as the TV show Lizzie McGuire, has passed away at the age of 71.

Robert Carradine, the youngest son of actor John Carradine, died by suicide on February 23rd after a twenty-year struggle with bipolar disorder. His brother, Keith Carradine, described him as the family’s foundation. The family announced his death with a statement to Deadline:
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Robert Carradine, our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother. He was a bright light in the lives of everyone who knew him. We are heartbroken by his loss, especially after his courageous 20-year struggle with Bipolar Disorder. We hope his story will help reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness and encourage others to seek help. We appreciate your understanding and ask for privacy as we grieve.
Robert Carradine, born on March 24, 1954, is one of four children of actors John Carradine and Sonia Sorel. His brothers are also actors – David Carradine and Keith Carradine – and his brother Christopher is a Disney Imagineer. Carradine began his acting career in 1972, appearing with John Wayne in The Cowboys. He went on to appear in early films by acclaimed directors like Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets (1973) and Hal Ashby’s Coming Home (1978). He even starred alongside his brothers David and Keith in The Long Riders. However, he’s best known for his role as Lewis Skolnick in the 1984 hit comedy Revenge of the Nerds.
Keith Carradine shared that his family was open about his brother’s courageous battle with bipolar disorder, rather than trying to conceal it.
I just want everyone to know what happened, and there’s absolutely no shame in it. It was an illness that ultimately took him from us, and I want to remember and celebrate him for fighting it with everything he had. He was such a beautiful soul, and incredibly talented – we’re going to miss him so much, every single day. What will stay with me is how funny he was, how incredibly wise, and how accepting and tolerant of everyone he was. That was just the kind of person my little brother was.
Robert Carradine is survived by his children, grandchildren, brothers, nieces, and nephews. His family has requested privacy as they mourn. He will be fondly remembered for his kindness and warm heart.
