Riverdale Gets Dark: ‘Afterlife With Archie’ Coming to Disney+ as Live Action Series

Archie and his friends are heading into a more intense and suspenseful storyline on television. Disney+ is creating Afterlife With Archie, a one-hour drama series inspired by the well-known Archie comic books created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla, according to Deadline.

The series has already received a script-to-series commitment.

Afterlife With Archie will present a drastically different take on Riverdale. The usually peaceful town will be overrun by zombies, creating a perilous environment. Thankfully, the creative team behind the original comic book is involved: Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is writing the show and will also be an executive producer, working with Jimmy Gibbons and his Muckle Man Productions. This promises a thrilling and terrifying experience for fans.

Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman will serve as executive producers representing Berlanti Productions. Jon Goldwater will executive produce on behalf of Archie Comics Studios.

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa has played a vital role in adapting Archie comics for the screen. He’s the author of popular horror titles like Afterlife With Archie and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He also stepped into the role of Archie Comics’ Chief Creative Officer in 2014.

He was also involved in the creation of Riverdale, which originally aired on Fox before moving to the CW. The show lasted for seven seasons and spawned a spin-off called Katy Keene. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ran for four seasons on Netflix, totaling 36 episodes. Now, Afterlife With Archie will be the next Archie comic to be adapted for television.

As a huge movie and TV buff, I was really surprised to read on Deadline that this project is the biggest deal Warner Bros. Television has struck with Disney+ yet. It sounds like a really significant move for both studios!

This represents another significant streaming venture for Berlanti Productions and WBTV at Disney this year, coming after Foster Dade, which was picked up for a pilot at Hulu.
