As someone who grew up with the original Mortal Kombat games, I must admit that the recent change in the gender of Sektor and Cyrax has sparked a bit of nostalgia-tinged controversy among fans. However, as someone who appreciates the franchise’s ability to evolve with the times, I find this change refreshing and innovative.
Without a doubt, Mortal Kombat stands as one of the most iconic and widely beloved video game series ever created. Time and again, when this combat game has been launched over the past several decades, it has successfully evolved itself. This ability to reinvent itself is what has enabled the franchise to thrive in a highly competitive and rapidly changing market.
In essence, Mortal Kombat is a blend of narrative and characters, but it’s the characters that truly define the series. These characters are often what players recall when thinking about the franchise (apart from the infamous fatalities). Over time, the character roster has grown substantially with positive feedback, but a recent alteration stirred up some discontent among fans.
It’s worth noting that the DLC expansion for “Mortal Kombat 1,” titled “Khaos Reigns,” is scheduled to launch on September 24, 2024. In anticipation of this release, a teaser trailer has been unveiled, revealing that the DLC will bring about a change in the gender for two well-known characters. However, not all fans are pleased with this alteration.
Having been a passionate gamer for over two decades, I must say, the anticipation and excitement I feel before watching a game trailer is always through the roof! That’s why I appreciate it when developers share trailers early, as it gives us fans a sneak peek into what’s to come. So, without further ado, here’s the trailer we promised you earlier for the upcoming game – enjoy!
Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns … Cyrax Game-play and story trailer.
Launches Sept 24

It’s worth noting that the well-known characters Sektor and Cyrax from Sektor are now portrayed as female, which deviates from the original canon. However, this shift is quite invigorating in our view. Given that these characters typically wear masks and their gender was never a significant aspect of their characterization, we don’t foresee any issues arising from this change. Yet, not everyone seems to agree, as some fans have expressed their dissenting opinions online.
Can we get the MK11 skins with the male voices for Sektor and Cyrax?

Wow, it’s fascinating how the game we discussed during congressional hearings has adapted to contemporary tastes… Truly, these are exciting times!

Dear Ed,

Wow, what a remarkable and courageous move! It seems that Cyrax has undergone a transformation into a female character. I wonder if the typical Mortal Kombat enthusiast finds this DEI character change delightful. Truly, it appears to be quite unfortunate.
