As the streaming landscape continues to evolve and merge into entities resembling cable networks, it’s no longer a shock that one more streamer, Hulu, is set to disappear. Although its transition has been expected, we can’t help but feel a sense of melancholy as the beloved Hulu app prepares to shut down. Known for its unique content like “Shōgun,” “Alien: Earth,” and “The Bear,” Hulu Green has significantly marked the streaming era. In June, Disney completed its acquisition of Hulu from Comcast, spending millions of dollars to claim full ownership. Now, they are integrating Hulu into their system. The Hulu app will be gradually phased out and eventually closed, with shows such as “Shōgun,” “Alien: Earth,” and “The Bear” moving to the Disney+ app instead. Here’s what we know about the closing of the Hulu app.
Disney has announced plans for a unified Disney+ and Hulu app, set to launch in 2026. This combined app will house both individual Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions under one roof. The CEO, Bob Iger, and CFO, Hugh Johnston, explained that this integration aims to enhance their streaming offerings by merging Hulu into Disney+. The result is a comprehensive entertainment package offering top-tier brands, family programming, news, and premium live sports content all within a single application.
The rationale behind closing Hulu and merging all operations involves enhancing user experience, reducing expenses through a unified technological infrastructure, and capitalizing on the chance to combine advertising offers.
On a global scale, the Star tab on Hulu, featuring content from Disney-controlled brands like ABC, FX, and 20th Century Studios, will be replaced. Instead, Disney aims to present Hulu as their universal platform for all-around entertainment.
Essentially, the closure of the Hulu app is more about symbolism than reality. Regardless if the app continues to exist, Disney will own 100% of Hulu. However, this symbolizes a significant shift happening across streaming platforms, making us question whether unique voices in content creation are still prevalent. In the early days of streaming, multiple platforms brought diverse perspectives and intentions to create movies and series. With Disney+ absorbing Hulu, it visibly shows how the variety of viewpoints is diminishing.
RIP Hulu app, we’ll see you inside of Disney+.
