In simpler terms, Ringo Starr, the well-known drummer from The Beatles, has shared the story behind his distinctive stage name. Originally named Richard Starkey, he mused about how his stage moniker was different compared to Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and George Harrison.
During an interview on SiriusXM’s The Beatles Channel, the artist explained that he earned the nickname “Rings” because of his habit of wearing a lot of rings. Over time, this affectionate name transformed into his professional identity.
Starr shared that he initially thought the name “Ringo Starr” was a bit of a laugh, particularly when compared to the more straightforward names of his bandmates – John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. He jokingly said, “Wow, cool. Ringo always sounded funny to me, John, Paul, George.
He once told a quite entertaining story about the origin of his famous nickname. As a young teenager, Starr recalled an instance from his initial attempts at composing music while performing in smaller gigs with another band.
Starr reminisced, “Back then, I used to sport multiple rings, which I don’t wear anymore. In Liverpool, once you become recognized, folks begin to recognize you. So they would call out, ‘Hey, Ring-bearer, what’s the latest?’ This nickname started to stick.
The singer explained, “That’s how I came to be known as Ringo Starr, not Ringo or Ringo Starkey. Many people, even you, recognize me by this name today.
Initially, Ringo Starr was known for his humorous antics, but later on, he gained legendary status along with his band.
