Ridley Scott Was Offered To Direct Top Gun: Maverick But Declined Because Of THIS Reason

As a lifelong cinema enthusiast who has been fortunate enough to witness the genius of both Tony and Ridley Scott, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of respect for their decisions, even when they choose not to direct. The fact that Ridley declined the opportunity to continue his brother’s legacy in Top Gun: Maverick speaks volumes about the bond between these two cinematic titans and their shared artistic vision.

Originally directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun: Maverick dominated the box office, but without him in the director’s chair. Instead, his sibling, Ridley Scott, had a chance to helm the sequel, yet chose not to take it up.

More recently, during a candid conversation, the director, renowned for creating masterpieces like Gladiator, left everyone with tears in their eyes when he explained his decision and discussed the offer he had declined.

According to a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Ridley Scott disclosed that the movie was initially proposed to him. He added, “I declined, stating, ‘I don’t wish to imitate my brother.’ Tony had always been captivated by the present.

In other interviews, the director of House of Gucci revealed that a significant number of his films are rooted in historical events. Alternatively, when it comes to choosing projects, he has a preference for creating films centered around fantasy or narratives delving into the realm of science fiction.

“Tony didn’t like fantasy,” the filmmaker added.

The film Top Gun: Maverick was later directed by Joseph Kosinski.

In case you’re unaware, Tony Scott was the man behind the camera for the iconic action-adventure film Top Gun, released in 1986. His other notable works include heartfelt films like True Romance and Man on Fire. Regrettably, this esteemed director took his life in August 2012 at the age of 68.

Regarding Joseph Kosinski, it’s worth mentioning that he has directed several noteworthy films including Only the Brave, the 2010 sequel of the epic film, Tron: Legacy, and various others as well.

When asked by THR for additional comments on his brother, the director of Exodus: Gods and Kings tenderly replied, “I deeply feel his absence.

Similarly to how the first Top Gun movie created quite an impression globally, its follow-up, Top Gun: Maverick, was equally successful.

In this newest film, Tom Cruise returns as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, taking center stage once more. Here, he serves as a mentor to a fresh batch of aviators.

In addition to Miles Teller and Glen Powell, the movie features Val Kilmer returning in his legendary role from the original as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.

In the meantime, prepare yourself for an upcoming box office sensation! Ridley Scott is back with a sequel to his epic film, Gladiator.

In the next installment, we’ll see Paul Mescal joining a stellar ensemble which includes Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, among others.

Gladiator II is set to be released on November 22, 2024.
