Ridley Scott Confirms Sequel to 2024 Hit, Hints at More ‘Alien’ to Come

Ridley Scott is currently developing ‘Gladiator 3’, with a potential new ‘Alien’ prequel also in the pipeline.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the renowned filmmaker has revealed some exciting news! He’s currently working on a new Gladiator film, and if inspiration strikes, we might even see another Alien prequel in the future.

Following the premiere of “Gladiator II” in 2024, which serves as a continuation of the 2000 blockbuster, the movie was helmed by Scott for direction and production, while David Scarpa penned the script.

The main cast includes Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington. In this production, Paul Mescal assumes the character of Lucius Verus Aurelius. Notably, Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi are returning from the previous film.

The sequel, titled Gladiator II, narrates the tale of Lucius, once a Roman prince, now an exile who finds himself imprisoned and compelled to battle as a gladiator under Macrinus, a man with a past as a slave, harboring ambitions to dethrone the co-emperors Caracalla and Geta.

For over twenty years, there have been continuous discussions about the following film installment. Preliminary ideas were proposed as early as 2001, yet the project’s growth halted upon DreamWorks being acquired by Paramount in 2006.

In 2018, I got excited about the official announcement of this remarkable project. Later, around early 2023, I was thrilled to learn that Mescal was cast for the role. Filming began in my calendar from June 2023 and stretched through to January 2024. Unfortunately, we encountered a setback when Hollywood labor strikes caused a five-month delay in our production schedule.

Majority of critics praised the movie, with 70% of over 400 reviews being positive. On Rotten Tomatoes, it earned a rating of 6.6 out of 10. The site commended the film for being reminiscent of its predecessor while increasing the action and camp, stating that it’s Denzel Washington’s captivating performance that gives the movie much of its power and dignity.

The movie not only did well critically, but it also raked in impressive figures at the global box office. In the U.S. and Canada alone, it grossed an amount of $172.4 million, while in other countries, it earned a staggering $289.7 million. Adding these amounts together gives us a grand total of $462.2 million worldwide.
