As a seasoned moviegoer who has witnessed the evolution of cinema over the past few decades, I find myself both intrigued and skeptical about Ridley Scott‘s decision to venture into the arena once more with Gladiator 3. At 86 years young, Sir Ridley is showing no signs of slowing down, which is nothing short of inspiring. However, it does raise questions about the longevity of his ambitious plans, especially when one considers the unpredictable nature of the film industry and the ever-changing tastes of audiences.
It seems Ridley Scott might be following in James Cameron’s footsteps or simply keeping himself occupied, but either way, the director of Alien, who has been revisiting past successes lately, appears to already be working on Gladiator 3. Given his forward-thinking nature, this move isn’t entirely unexpected. What’s somewhat surprising is that Gladiator II, a sequel released 24 years ago, is still set to hit theaters just a month from now.
In conversation with TotalFilm (through Deadline), Scott revealed that he’s in the initial planning phase for another sequel. He shared, “I’ve got eight pages already. I’ve started a solid foundation for it.” He also hinted, “If there’s a Gladiator 3, I don’t believe you’d revisit the arena again. However, I found myself back in the arena…” It’s not entirely clear what he implies by this statement.
Scott has also shared this information with other media outlets. He recently told French magazine Premiere that he’s set off the spark for a third installment. According to him, the ending of Gladiator II resembles The Godfather, as Michael Corleone finds himself in a position he didn’t desire and is questioning, “Now, Father, what do I do?” Therefore, the next film will focus on a man who doesn’t want to be where he currently stands.
To me, it seems a bit premature, given the current state of legacy sequels not always being as profitable as they once were. Moreover, Ridley Scott, at 86 years old, is quite an active filmmaker, with four other projects in various stages of development or production. While there are eight pages for “Gladiator II,” it’s uncertain if the movie will even happen due to Scott’s busy schedule and the success of the upcoming sequel. Only time will reveal the truth!
