Ricky Gervais, the comedian, has given almost £2.5 million to 22 different animal charities thanks to the money he earned from his latest stand-up comedy tour.
Donations help animal organizations throughout the UK, such as Flori’s Friends Animal Rescue in Chartham Hatch, Retreat Animal Rescue in High Halden, and Safe Haven for Donkeys in Haywards Heath, West Sussex.
Gervais, 64, announced on Facebook that he had made donations to charity “to celebrate the spirit of Christmas.” He described the chosen organizations as “lovely charities” and wished everyone a “Merry Xmas, critters.”
He playfully recalled a saying from his late mother: “She always said you can’t take it with you.” He then added with a laugh, “Well, I can’t now, Mum, but I could have spent the money on 30 speedboats and had fun with my friends in the Mediterranean. Sadly, it’s too late for that now.”
Ricky Gervais is continuing his charitable work, donating another £100,000 after giving £1.9 million last year from a previous tour. This latest donation will go to Flori’s Friends Animal Rescue, an organization that provides wheelchairs and care for paralyzed dogs, helping them cover their general operating expenses.
Natalia George, the founder, shared with BBC Radio Kent how thrilled she was with the news. She believes Ricky Gervais was searching for a promising charity doing important work, and that their organization—which aims to help people accept dogs with disabilities—really resonated with him. She emphasized the significant impact Ricky has had on the lives of many dogs with paralysis.
The Donkey Sanctuary in West Sussex will also receive funds from the donation. According to CEO Andy Foxcroft, this generous gift arrives at a crucial time, as their teams are facing immense pressure while helping donkeys in Gaza and the West Bank. With the need for emergency veterinary treatment increasing, the donation will allow them to continue providing vital care despite the difficult circumstances.
The donations will be split between several charities, with four receiving £150,000 each and seventeen getting £100,000. An additional £132,000 will go to Nowzad, an organization providing animal welfare assistance in Afghanistan and Ukraine. Pen Farthing, the founder of Nowzad, expressed his gratitude, saying they were thrilled with Ricky’s generous donation.
