Ricky Gervais Shares the Jason Momoa and Peter Dinklage Joke He Dropped from the Golden Globes

As a long-time fan of Ricky Gervais, I was fascinated to hear about a joke he scrapped from his Golden Globes hosting days. He hosted that show five times, and let me tell you, he wasn’t afraid to playfully tease – or even really roast – the Hollywood elite. It’s interesting to learn even his famously fearless humor had limits!

In his new Netflix special, Mortality, released on Tuesday, Gervais revealed that although the Golden Globes never asked him to remove any jokes, he did once decide to cut one himself. He clarified, “I’ve never had a joke stopped by the Golden Globes, and that’s completely true.”

Oh, I just remembered a joke I didn’t tell earlier because I got a little nervous. I think I was being too careful, but I’d like to share it with you now.

Gervais explained his planned joke about Jason Momoa, saying it was a self-deprecating way to admit he gets intimidated. He joked, “I’m happy to criticize actors – who’s afraid of actors? – but when it comes to someone really big and imposing, I’m not so courageous.”

He explained that he’d planned a joke about the next presenter, saying he was going to remark that the presenter had a small penis, comparing its size to a baby’s arm. He’d shared the joke with a friend who worried it might be seen as racist. He defended it, arguing it wasn’t about the presenter’s race, but about his physical size.

Gervais revealed a particularly edgy joke he’d considered: “I was going to say I have nothing bad to say about the next presenter, because he’s got a small penis—unlike Peter Dinklage, who has a small penis.” However, despite his willingness to push boundaries, he decided not to include it in the Golden Globes broadcast.

Nikki Glaser is returning to host the Golden Globes for the second consecutive year, with the awards show taking place on January 11th.
