In a recent interview with Holo Files, director Rian Johnson discussed his decisions for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, explaining why he deliberately broke with some of the series’ established traditions.
Johnson, a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast, explained that he sympathizes with fans who get upset when a story takes an unexpected turn. He said, “Because I grew up loving Star Wars, I understand how people react when something challenges their expectations.”
The filmmaker believes the biggest error is being too cautious. They explained that truly successful Star Wars films, starting with The Empire Strikes Back, weren’t afraid to be bold and even upset fans. This willingness to shake things up initially sparked debate and anger, but ultimately led to many fans embracing the new direction. Avoiding risk, they argue, is the real mistake.
The Last Jedi sparked a lot of debate among Star Wars fans and is considered one of the most controversial films in the series. As Vox’s Emily St. James noted, some viewers disliked its modern themes, comedic moments, or the way the story and characters developed.
A big source of disagreement among fans was the revelation that Rey came from a completely ordinary family. Many had expected her to be related to Luke Skywalker or another important character from the original Star Wars movies. Some also thought the villain Snoke wasn’t developed enough, and that Luke Skywalker acted in ways that didn’t match his established heroic personality.
Even though some people criticized it, many viewers liked how daring the film was. Several praised its exciting story, unique atmosphere, and willingness to try something different. Critics pointed out that strong fan expectations sometimes made it difficult for viewers to embrace the new direction, but the film also led to interesting conversations and, ultimately, a growing fondness among many over time.
The Last Jedi still sparks a lot of discussion about what fans want from big franchises and how much creative freedom filmmakers should have. Director Rian Johnson argues that it’s important to take risks and try new things, even with a well-loved series like Star Wars.
