Rian Johnson has confirmed what fans suspected all along: his planned Star Wars trilogy has been cancelled.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, actor John Boyega discussed The Last Jedi, the negative reactions it received, and how his connection with fans has evolved.
He’s learned to worry less about criticism, realizing that strong reactions – both positive and negative – simply come with being part of the Star Wars universe, even though it can be difficult to take personally.
Johnson initially agreed to create a new series of three films back in 2017, before The Last Jedi came out. However, a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter indicates those plans are no longer moving forward.
He says he’ll always have a connection to Star Wars, but it sounds more like fond memories than a plan to work with Lucasfilm again.

The Last Jedi’s Fallout Still Shapes Disney’s Strategy
There’s no way around it: The Last Jedi derailed the Star Wars franchise.
Prior to Rian Johnson being hired to direct a film, Disney already had several movies planned for release and was actively making The Rise of Skywalker.
Right after The Last Jedi came out, things shifted dramatically. Disney put a hold on any future Star Wars movies and Lucasfilm focused all its energy on creating shows for Disney+.
The studio explored several potential projects with different filmmakers – including Kevin Feige, Patty Jenkins, Taika Waititi, and Damon Lindelof – but none of them progressed beyond the initial stages.
Generally, Star Wars films keep getting made unless there’s a significant problem. “The Last Jedi” was that problem, and Disney has been addressing the negative reaction to it for the past seven years.

Star Wars Movies Are Still Barely Moving
Lucasfilm is just starting to release movies in theaters again, and their first project isn’t a brand new story – it’s The Mandalorian & Grogu, scheduled for May 2026. This is likely because it’s the most reliable and well-known Star Wars property Disney currently has.
After The Mandalorian & Grogu, Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling are making a Star Wars movie called Starfighter. Unlike other Star Wars films, it seems this one will be a self-contained story, not directly tied to the larger Star Wars saga.
Since 2017, Lucasfilm hasn’t regained its previous success, and this seems directly linked to the reception of Rian Johnson’s film, which led to a hesitancy to release films in theaters.

Johnson’s Farewell Feels Final
Johnson says Star Wars will “always be a part of [him],” but nothing suggests he’ll ever return.
If Disney truly wanted a continuation of the Star Wars trilogy, it would have happened by now. Instead, The Last Jedi received a lot of criticism, Solo failed at the box office, plans for further theatrical releases were cancelled, and Rian Johnson shifted his focus to a new detective series on Netflix.
His trilogy isn’t delayed. It’s over.
