Rian Johnson, who directed Star Wars: The Last Jedi, has announced that the trilogy of Star Wars films he was developing is no longer moving forward.
Johnson, the director of the highly praised Breaking Bad episode “Ozymandias,” discussed his work on the Star Wars sequel and the reactions to it.
Johnson described working on The Last Jedi as a creatively liberating experience. He explained that the team worked in a supportive and uninhibited environment, and once they were immersed in the creative process, they didn’t really focus on outside expectations or pressure.
Although the film performed well financially and satisfied Lucasfilm, it sparked a lot of debate among fans, especially regarding how Luke Skywalker was depicted and the type of humor used. Director Rian Johnson has spoken about handling the negative feedback he received online.
Before directing the Star Wars film, I used to be very involved with Twitter, and I felt compelled to respond to any negative comments. As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I realized that even harsh criticism often comes from a place of strong passion for the franchise. However, that doesn’t make it easy when those comments feel personal.
As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really excited when Rian Johnson signed on to do a new trilogy back in 2017. The idea was to introduce fresh faces and maybe even explore a different era of the galaxy far, far away. But things shifted, and by 2022, it seemed like the project got put on the back burner because he got really busy with the Knives Out movies – which are great, don’t get me wrong! He did say he still wanted to come back to Star Wars once he finished up those other commitments, so there’s still a little hope, I guess.
Despite initial plans, Johnson confirmed in July 2025 that his planned Star Wars trilogy wouldn’t happen. He expressed his deep connection to the franchise, saying, “Star Wars is a huge part of who I am and how I think,” but clarified that the trilogy was no longer in development, though he didn’t rule out future involvement with the series.
Johnson clearly still cares about Star Wars, but it remains to be seen if he’ll work on another project in that universe. He’s also given us a glimpse into the difficulties of creating content within such a huge and popular franchise, and how much pressure comes with fan expectations.
