Revisit Val Kilmer’s Iconic Top Gun Character Amid His Tragic Demise at 65; Find Out How He Got the Nickname Iceman

One of the most unforgettable characters that Val Kilmer has brought to life during his extensive acting career is Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. As we grieve the passing of a truly exceptional talent, let’s take a moment to remember one of the most iconic roles Val Kilmer graced our screens with.

In Top Gun, Kilmer’s character, nicknamed Iceman, earned his catchy moniker due to his exceptional flying style. The protagonist, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (portrayed by Tom Cruise), is introduced to Iceman through a mutual friend. It becomes clear that Iceman is renowned for his icy and composed demeanor in the air; eventually, he emerges as Maverick’s formidable rival.

The goose played by Anthony Edwards discloses, “That’s his style in the air: Ice-cold and precise. No errors. He gradually wears you down. You become tired, annoyed, and make a mistake, and he wins.” At first, Iceman isn’t particularly fond of Cruise’s character, criticizing the reckless manner in which he pilots his jet. However, over time, their relationship evolves, with Lt. Tom eventually growing to admire Maverick.

It’s interesting to note that contrary to popular belief, Kilmer initially showed no interest in portraying Iceman, even referring to it as “silly” and “warmongering”. This revelation was made in his 2021 documentary, Val. The role was ultimately accepted due to contractual obligations. He explained, “At the time, none of us realized the film would become such a commercial phenomenon. Suddenly, I was propelled into the realm of celebrity, and for the rest of my life, I’d be known as Iceman by every pilot at every airport I visited.

In his 2020 memoir, titled “I’m Your Huckleberry”, he confessed that he made a rather unconventional choice for an audition – he turned up in a ridiculous outfit. More specifically, he wore over-sized, sickly green Australian shorts. He delivered the lines without much enthusiasm, yet surprisingly, he was offered the role. However, he didn’t seem particularly thrilled about it.

Nevertheless, as time went on, it appears that Kilmer developed affection for the character, contributing significantly to one of the most renowned films in Hollywood history.
