REVIEW: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has truly left me spellbound. Coming from someone who’s seen his fair share of AAA games, this one stands out like a beacon in the night sky.

At last, Bethesda in collaboration with MachineGames has unveiled the eagerly anticipated Indy title “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle“. First appearing on Xbox and PC platforms, a PS5 version will follow suit next year. In essence, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” is an extraordinary game that effortlessly meets the high expectations set by its extensive hype (a challenge many modern games face). Below you’ll find a spoiler-free review detailing my delightful experience with “The Great Circle” and why I believe it embodies the type of top-tier AAA game that we’ve all been yearning for.

The Graphics and Music Are Fantastic

To begin with, the game, “The Great Circle,” stands out as visually striking. With the ninth generation of gaming, there’s been a lingering question about the true progress made from the eighth to the ninth generation, as many modern games appear and perform much like those released nearly a decade ago. However, “The Great Circle” offers a refreshing change with its rich, crisp, breathtaking visuals. The graphics, lighting effects, shadows, and colors all combine to create an image that is simply flawless.

The music accompanying the film is equally impressive, being expertly crafted by multiple Grammy-winning composer Gordy Haab, renowned for his work on numerous Star Wars video games. The soundtrack for The Great Circle bears a strong resemblance to John Williams’ style and seamlessly blends into the Indiana Jones universe.

The Game Has a Variety of Play Styles

Overplaying a single game feature can often lead to monotony in video games, which leaves me uninterested after a while and unwilling to continue playing for extended periods.

In “The Great Circle”, you have the freedom to shape your own gaming adventure. You could choose to slip by adversaries unnoticed, hurl objects to divert them, or opt for a more direct approach using a shovel to smash your path clear. This isn’t about following a strict formula; instead, you can opt for stealth in certain areas and brute force in others. The game allows you to craft the Indiana Jones tale that appeals to you personally, which I found incredibly engaging and maintained an enjoyable experience throughout.

The Environment Felt Real and Alive

In this game, the small touches in the setting truly brought the experience to life and gave it a striking level of realism compared to many other games. For instance, every object within the game world had specific functions and adhered to realistic physics. So, if you opted to use a wine bottle as a weapon against an enemy, you’d need to strike them multiple times more than if you were using a hammer, bat, or even a guitar. All objects in the world carried their own weight and strength, which made every decision count.

Lesson learned the tough route: Assuming I could take down some foes at a distance with a firearm, I naively thought I’d avoid close combat. However, firing the rifle produced a loud noise that attracted every enemy in the vicinity, leaving me surrounded by nine adversaries. I was forced to fight my way out in a hail of gunfire. Such unforeseen realism truly adds thrill and longevity to the gameplay experience.

The Verdict

Despite recent AAA games falling short of expectations, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was a thrilling exception. It offers exhilarating action coupled with an epic voyage, set within a richly detailed and stunning environment. The game could have easily been perceived as a Tomb Raider or Uncharted spin-off, leveraging Indy merely to boost sales… but Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was not only enjoyable to play, it solidified Indy’s status as the undisputed king of adventure games.

Rating: 9/10
