Return to Westeros: First Teaser for ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Revealed

HBO has released a first look at its upcoming Game of Thrones prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The series is inspired by George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg and will return viewers to the world of Westeros.

Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin created the show, which takes place centuries before the story of *Game of Thrones*.

The story centers around Ser Duncan the Tall, called Dunk, and his young squire, Aegon Targaryen, who goes by Egg. Peter Claffey portrays Dunk, and Dexter Sol Ansell plays Egg.

The cast also features Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as the puppeteer Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Prince Maekar Targaryen.

Filming for the series began in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in June 2024 and finished in September 2024. The six-episode season will debut on HBO and Max in January 2026. Originally planned for a late 2025 release, the premiere date has been adjusted slightly.

As a huge fan of ‘Game of Thrones’, I’m hearing this new series is going to be a lot different. Apparently, it’s less about massive battles and more focused on the characters themselves and their individual journeys – a more intimate story, if you will.

The story follows Dunk and Egg on their journey through the Seven Kingdoms, where they meet nobles, knights, and face the perils of a land still shaped by the legacy of dragons.

I was so excited to hear George R.R. Martin say that Dunk and Egg are two of his absolute favorite characters! It’s amazing to think we’re finally going to see them brought to life on screen, and it makes me even more hyped for the show knowing how much these characters mean to him.

Now that the first preview is available, viewers are starting to get a sense of what to expect from the new series. HBO hasn’t revealed much about the story, but the clip suggests it will revisit themes of loyalty, deception, and the powerful Targaryen family.
