Zach Cregger’s upcoming “Resident Evil” reboot is progressing, with indications suggesting that Czechia might serve as the main filming site. A document submitted to the Czech Audio-visual Fund by local production partner Stillking Films hints at potential production commencement in or around Prague this summer.
Filming Could Start This Summer
Back in April (as reported by The Prague Reporter), the registration for the upcoming Resident Evil movie was made, and this aligns with Cregger’s previous statements on his podcast regarding exploration of “Eastern Europe” for the project. Sony has set a release date for the unnamed Resident Evil film as September 18, 2026.
It’s important to point out that registering with the Czech Audiovisual Fund does not guarantee that a movie will be filmed there. For instance, the film Return to Silent Hill, which was initially registered, ended up being shot in Germany due to incentive problems. However, it is said that these issues have been resolved in the Czech Republic as of this year. At the very least, registration does suggest that filming will begin soon.
A More Faithful, Horror-Focused Adaptation
According to Cregger, his interpretation of “Resident Evil” leans towards the original games, emphasizing suspense and psychological terror over zombie-centric action. At CinemaCon, he clarified the film’s atmosphere, alluding to the iconic Resident Evil scene: a character standing on the brink of darkness, running low on ammunition, with nothing but fear ahead.
The movie is set to trace the journey of a sole character, moving from “point A” to “point B,” delving further and further into a metaphorical “hell.” This promises a focused, character-centric narrative.
Who’s Involved
Sony’s Columbia Pictures is collaborating on the movie production with Constantin Film, PlayStation Productions, and Vertigo Entertainment. Cregger is jointly crafting the screenplay alongside Shay Hatten, who has previously worked on John Wick: Chapter 4 and boasts expertise in filming locations like Prague.
Cregger’s recent triumph with “Barbarian” and the upcoming “Weapons” (set for release on August 8, 2025) has catapulted him into high demand among horror filmmakers. This year, his proposal for “Resident Evil” was the winning bid at Sony.
Early Casting Details
I’m thrilled to share that I’ve heard Austin Abrams, known for his captivating performance in “Wolfs,” might be taking on a significant role in an upcoming project. Plus, there are whispers that Mikey Madison, who stole the show in “Anora,” could star alongside him! However, it’s important to note that an official announcement is still pending.
With production likely ramping up soon, expect more casting and plot details in the coming months.
What’s next for Resident Evil?
On Friday, there was a major unveiling of the upcoming video game, “Resident Evil: Requiem,” which marks the ninth installment in the series. This game seems to focus on a new character, Grace Ashcroft, an FBI technical analyst, who is looking into a string of peculiar deaths as we await the start of film production.
