As a devoted Marvel fan with over two decades of fandom under my belt, I must say that the anticipation for Shang-Chi and his journey through the MCU is palpable. The success of ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ has left us yearning for more, and the teases about a sequel have only fueled our excitement.
As a Marvel fanatic, I must say that ‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ exceeded all my expectations. Guided by Destin Daniel Cretton’s visionary direction, Simu Liu portrayed Shang-Chi masterfully, navigating the complexities of his past when his father, Wenwu, the formidable leader of the Ten Rings, entangled him and his sister Xialing in a quest for a mysterious village. The ensemble was stellar, featuring comedic brilliance from Awkwafina, grace from Michelle Yeoh, the return of Ben Kingsley, and the captivating Tony Leung.
Starting in December 2021, I found myself diving back into the creative process for a sequel, with Destin Cretton once again taking on the roles of both writer and director. Excitedly, Simu Liu confirmed his return to the project, expressing his eagerness to delve deeper into Shang-Chi’s newly discovered power, particularly in relation to the Ten Rings, and further explore how this iconic character fits within the expansive Marvel universe.
By July 2023, Liu acknowledged that the timeline for the sequel was unclear. In November, Cretton stepped down from his position as director of ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ to concentrate on the ‘Shang-Chi’ sequel, which is slated to commence filming in March 2025.
In the upcoming Marvel Zombies animated mini-series, Shang-Chi is expected to play a significant role. Nevertheless, no formal announcements have been made regarding this beyond his inclusion. Nonetheless, Alex Perez, an industry insider, shared some intriguing insights during a December AMA on Discord.
In a surprising twist, Perez unveiled a fresh Avengers squad consisting of Shang-Chi, Captain Marvel, Hulk (Bruce Banner), and Wong. This team composition leaves fans wondering about the whereabouts of well-known figures such as Sam Wilson, Bucky, Ant-Man, and the Thunderbolts.
As a diehard fan, I’m excited to share that Perez hints at some intriguing insights in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’. This upcoming film promises to delve into why certain characters are absent from the new team and shed light on the significant ripple effects it has on Earth-616, the primary Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Moreover, he subtly hints at some drama brewing when Sam Wilson discovers the new Avengers lineup, with special attention given to Bucky’s inclusion, considering his past as a perceived villain.
Shang-Chi is joining a new team of Avengers led by Carol Danvers, Bruce Banner, and Wong. It’s intriguing, isn’t it? But where are Sam, Bucky, Ant-Man, and the Thunderbolts? That’s a question Doomsday might address in the 616 universe, as it could create challenges. For instance, imagine Sam’s reaction when he learns that the Avengers consist of former villains and one of them is Bucky. This will make for an exciting scene to witness!
According to Perez, Destin Daniel Cretton has concepts for a follow-up to ‘Shang-Chi,’ possibly involving the Atlas Foundation. The holdup isn’t due to ‘Avengers 5’ or ‘Spider-Man 4.’ Instead, they feel it’s premature to initiate the project at this time.
Destin is brainstorming concepts for a Shang-Chi sequel, and one of these involves the Atlas Foundation. It’s not linked to Avengers 5 or Spider-Man 4 at this point; instead, it seems that the timing isn’t quite right just yet.
It’s unexpected because it was speculated that the Ten Rings would carry similar significance in the upcoming story arcs as the Infinity Stones did in Phases 1 to 3, not forgetting Kamala’s bangle too.
In the forthcoming saga, while the spotlight is primarily on mutants, it’s important to note that there’s ample space for additional narratives. Stories such as Nova’s cosmic journeys, the enchanting tales of the Midnight Sons, and eventually, Shang-Chi’s tale are also in the pipeline.
I thought this saga was all about mutants, but I’ve got good news for fellow fans of the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe! Just like the Multiverse Saga had tales outside the Multiverse, this upcoming one isn’t limited to just mutants. Get ready for an exciting journey with Nova and Eternals, and keep your eyes peeled for some thrilling supernatural adventures with the Midnight Sons too!
