The AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 90s tragically took the lives of many people worldwide, deeply affecting the entertainment world. Though many well-known male actors died from the disease, several talented actresses and performers also lost their lives. These women – including TV stars, singers, and groundbreaking artists and activists – were leaders in their fields. Today, we remember them not only for their work, but also for the bravery they demonstrated while battling a disease that was often poorly understood and unfairly stigmatized.
Amanda Blake

Amanda Blake was a familiar face on American television for almost twenty years, most famously known for playing Miss Kitty Russell in the series ‘Gunsmoke’. She was also a passionate advocate for animal welfare and played a role in establishing the Arizona Biltmore. While initially reported as cancer, her death in 1989 was later determined to be due to complications from AIDS, making her one of the first well-known actresses publicly linked to the virus during the height of the AIDS epidemic.
Gia Carangi

Gia Carangi is widely remembered as one of the very first supermodels. She graced the covers of magazines like ‘Vogue’ and ‘Cosmopolitan’ in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Her difficult life and battle with addiction were portrayed in the film ‘Gia’. After becoming ill, she was hospitalized and diagnosed with health problems related to HIV. Sadly, Carangi passed away in 1986 at just 26 years old, and was among the first well-known women in the U.S. to die from AIDS.
Tina Chow

Tina Chow was a well-known model, jewelry designer, and actress who rose to fame in the 1980s fashion scene. She featured in fashion films and greatly influenced the style seen in the movie ‘Dressed to Kill’. Beyond her creative work, Chow was dedicated to helping others and became a strong voice for AIDS awareness after being diagnosed with the illness. She passed away in 1992, leaving behind a reputation for grace and a lasting commitment to educating people about AIDS.
Ofra Haza

Ofra Haza was an Israeli singer and actress who became internationally famous for combining Middle Eastern musical traditions with pop music. She’s well known for voicing Yocheved in the animated film ‘The Prince of Egypt’ and singing ‘Deliver Us’ in several languages. Throughout her decades-long career, she appeared in films and released many successful albums in both Europe and the United States. Haza sadly passed away in 2000 from organ failure due to AIDS, a condition she kept private until just before her death.
Cookie Mueller

Cookie Mueller was an actress and writer who gained a devoted following for her work with filmmaker John Waters. She starred in several iconic underground films like ‘Pink Flamingos’, ‘Female Trouble’, and ‘Desperate Living’. Beyond movies, Mueller was a regular columnist and an important part of New York City’s art community. She tragically died in 1989 from complications related to AIDS, just a few months after her husband passed away from the same illness.
Angie Xtravaganza

Angie Xtravaganza was a key founder of the House of Xtravaganza, a famous group within New York City’s ballroom scene. She became well-known internationally after appearing in the important documentary ‘Paris Is Burning’. Angie mentored many aspiring performers and was a vital part of the underground drag and ballroom community. Sadly, she passed away in 1993 at the young age of 28 due to complications from AIDS, but her influence on LGBTQ+ history continues to be felt today.
Dorian Corey

Dorian Corey was a celebrated drag queen and actress best known for her insightful contributions to the documentary ‘Paris Is Burning’. A long-time performer, she also designed clothes for other drag artists. Through interviews, Corey helped people outside the ballroom scene understand its unique culture and complexities. Sadly, she died in 1993 from AIDS-related complications, not long after performing in New York theaters.
Zhu Jie

Zhu Jie was a popular Chinese actress in the 1990s, known for her roles in TV shows and plays. She starred in the film ‘Grown Up,’ which explored important social problems in China. Sadly, her promising career was tragically cut short by serious health issues stemming from addiction and a viral infection. She died in 2009, and her story continues to be an important part of raising AIDS awareness in China.
Sandra Bréa

I was such a fan of Sandra Bréa! She was a huge star in Brazil, really lighting up the screen in telenovelas like ‘Ti Ti Ti’. Back in the 70s, everyone thought she was a total icon – a true sex symbol. She wasn’t just on TV, though; she did so much work in films, on stage, and in special shows. What I really admired about her was her incredible courage. In 1993, she bravely shared that she was HIV-positive, and it really helped to break down a lot of prejudice in Brazil. It was heartbreaking when she passed away in 2000 from lung cancer, a result of complications from AIDS, but her legacy continues to inspire me.
Cláudia Magno

Cláudia Magno was a talented Brazilian actress known for her roles in popular TV shows like ‘Felicidade’ and ‘Meu Bem, Meu Mal’. She also worked in theater and film, receiving critical acclaim throughout the 1980s. At the peak of her career, she was hospitalized in Rio de Janeiro with severe breathing problems and sadly passed away in 1994 from complications related to AIDS. Her death came as a shock to her many fans and the Brazilian entertainment industry.
Meriah Nelson

I remember Meriah Nelson – she was a working actress and model out in California during the 80s, you’d probably recognize her from commercials. Sadly, she contracted HIV and became one of the first faces of how this epidemic was affecting women in Hollywood. She passed away in 1994 from complications of the virus, and her story always reminded me – and so many others – that this crisis was, and still is, very real.
