As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the ebb and flow of fandom culture throughout the years. The controversy surrounding Grant Gustin and his role as The Flash is a topic that has certainly piqued my interest.
For nine seasons, “The Flash” stood out among the Arrowverse’s lineup, earning immense success and captivating viewers with its lovable cast. Grant Gustin continues to be a fan favorite as the Fastest Man Alive, while Candice Patton’s depiction of Iris West still resonates positively with fans.
Nevertheless, while boasting a robust ensemble, the series encountered some disputes. For those well-versed in the source material, it’s common knowledge that Iris West is typically depicted as Caucasian; however, this character was recast for the show, sparking dissent among certain viewers.
In recent times, the practice of recasting characters with diverse backgrounds has grown more frequent, as studios strive to reflect a broader spectrum in their productions. This isn’t limited to superhero genres; it’s widespread. Some alterations, such as Samuel L. Jackson’s portrayal of Nick Fury, were generally well-received, whereas others, like Candice Patton playing Iris West, have faced significant criticism.
Patton openly discussed the harassment she encountered. She revealed that during the second season, the racial discrimination she experienced almost led her to leave the show. Fortunately, she chose to stay and the frequency of such abuse decreased (or at least she spoke about it less often). Nevertheless, the matter didn’t stop there, as Grant Gustin became involved when he advocated for LGBT rights.
In 2019, Gustin publicly expressed his backing for the LGBTQ+ community on Instagram, urging donations to Tie the Knot and the ACLU. However, some fans criticized him because while he advocated for this cause, he didn’t address the racial discrimination experienced by Patton’s character in the show.
He was publicly accused of being racist on his social media, much like Tom Holland recently was when he didn’t defend his Romeo & Juliet co-star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers from online attacks.
The accusations bothered Gustin so much that he felt the need to address them directly:
Whenever I come across disrespectful comments about my colleagues on my social media feeds, I don’t seek them out, but when I do see them, I stand up for them. Comments that are racially insensitive, blatantly racist, or simply trolling and bullying behavior will prompt me to block the user without delay. I consider this the maximum effort I am willing to expend on an internet troll.

One could contend that Gustin is justified in his approach towards online bullies and trolls. Such individuals often seek reactions because it validates their actions. Not responding might be the wisest course of action, but at times, remaining silent may also lead to problems, as inactivity can sometimes be perceived as more damaging than responding incorrectly.
