Born on November 24, 1990, in New York City, Sarah Hyland is a well-known actress. Coming from a family of performers – her parents are actors Melissa Canaday and Edward James Hyland – she started acting when she was very young.
She trained at the Professional Performing Arts School in Manhattan, which gave her a strong foundation in acting and singing. She started her on-screen career with a role in the 1997 film Private Parts, playing Howard Stern’s daughter. She continued to gain experience in both movies and theater, with appearances in Annie (1999) and Blind Date (2007).
I remember when Sarah Hyland really caught everyone’s attention – it was when she landed the role of Haley Dunphy on Modern Family back in 2009. That show was huge, and honestly, it became the role she was best known for, running all the way until 2020 after eleven seasons. It really defined her career, as far as I’m concerned.

Her work was widely praised, and she was even nominated for a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. But more significantly, her role on Modern Family truly established her in Hollywood, allowing her to share her comedic talent and personality with audiences around the world.
The show’s talented cast received the Screen Actors Guild Award for best comedy ensemble several times between 2011 and 2014. Actress Sarah Hyland has shared that working on the series was a formative experience, teaching her valuable life lessons about discipline, perseverance, and handling fame while she was still young.

Sarah Hyland became widely known for her role in Modern Family, but she’s been a busy actress for years. Before and alongside the show, she appeared in films like Geek Charming (2011), Struck by Lightning (2012), and Scary Movie 5 (2013), as well as Vampire Academy (2014), See You in Valhalla (2015), XOXO (2016), Dirty Dancing (2017), and The Wedding Year (2019). Hyland also has a strong background in theater, performing in both Broadway and off-Broadway productions, including Grey Gardens (2006–2007) and upcoming roles in The Great Gatsby and Just in Time, showcasing her versatility as an actress.

Besides her acting career, Hyland has also focused on music. She’s recorded covers of popular songs like “Closer” and “Don’t Wanna Know” with Boyce Avenue, and their version of “Don’t Wanna Know” even reached No. 62 on the Canadian Hot 100 chart in December 2016. She’s also worked with other artists including BoTalks, Jordan McGraw, and Adam DeVine, demonstrating her range and passion for creative projects beyond acting.

Sarah Hyland’s career grew to include hosting gigs, most notably ‘Love Island USA’ on Peacock from 2022-2023. She’s also been in commercials for brands like Nintendo 3DS and Taco Bell, collaborated with Olay, and even launched her own vitamin company, Sourse, in 2021, where she served as creative director. These projects show she’s skilled at blending her work in entertainment with business and brand partnerships.
Personally, Hyland has dealt with serious health issues. She was born with a kidney condition and received a kidney transplant from her father in 2012. When that kidney stopped working, her brother Ian gave her another one in 2017. She now takes medication to prevent her body from rejecting the new kidney, and also steroids, which make it hard for her to gain and keep weight and muscle.
She has been very candid in interviews about the difficult impact on her mental and physical health, even revealing to Self magazine that she once considered ending her life because she felt like she was weighing her family down. Despite facing these challenges, she has persevered with her work, sometimes even filming Modern Family while confined to bed.
Sarah Hyland’s romantic life has had its ups and downs. She previously dated actors Matt Prokop and Dominic Sherwood, and in 2019, she got engaged to Wells Adams. They tied the knot on August 20, 2022, at a wedding in a California vineyard, celebrated with her former co-stars from Modern Family.
