As a seasoned gamer and long-time Marvel fan, I must admit that I was initially skeptical about Agatha All Along. The show seemed to tick all the boxes for a potential flop, given the backlash against shows with similar themes in recent times. But boy, was I wrong!
Agatha All Along had its debut following The Acolyte, which received poor reception, primarily because of its problematic aspects in terms of quality and the intense criticism it faced regarding its DEI (Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion) themes.
Some followers of the MCU worried that the series “Agatha All Along” might meet a comparable destiny. Given the current struggles of the MCU, it appeared as though the show possessed the ingredients to initiate yet another wave of negative reviews.
Consider this: The series primarily focuses on a less popular character who might not be everyone’s favorite, and it incorporates elements of magic, witches, and spells. Remarkably, the majority of its characters are women. There’s only one male actor in the show, and he portrays a somewhat effeminate gay character.
Contrary to anticipation, the predicted negative reaction failed to occur. There were a few sporadic attempts at review-bombing the show, mostly on IMDb, but it appeared that even critics didn’t feel strongly enough about Agatha All Along to carry out such actions.
However, the viewership numbers told a different story.
In its initial seven-day run on Disney+, Agatha All Along garnered 9.3 million views. Although this view count is less than The Acolyte, it’s important to note that Agatha All Along boasted the highest rate of viewers choosing to continue watching among any MCU series so far, according to Marvel Executive Brad Winderbaum.
It indicates that the series consistently drew a large number of viewers who tuned in week after week, suggesting that it successfully captured and maintained audience interest. Last week’s Nielsen ratings unexpectedly ranked Agatha All Along eighth among original programs.
Contrarily, Max’s “The Penguin” – praised as the greatest superhero series yet – didn’t find a place on the list. This might be due to various reasons such as its limited release, with only one episode being available so far.
Following a spectacular and eye-catching seventh episode, it’s been reported by Deadline that the viewership soared to a remarkable 4.2 million people in a single day, representing a significant 35% rise compared to the initial episode’s audience figures!
It seems clear that although Agatha All Along may not have been the easiest blockbuster in the MCU, similar to Deadpool and Wolverine, it has still managed to achieve success, particularly among its intended audience.
What makes it stand out? “Agatha All Along” has the distinction of being the most cost-effective Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production so far. This is due to its extensive use of practical effects, a choice that lowers the threshold for profitability compared to series like “She-Hulk” and “Secret Invasion.
With two more episodes still to come, I have no doubt that they will break records as well.
