The first season of Ahsoka continued the stories of characters from the animated series Star Wars Rebels, often in unexpected ways. A particularly big change happened for Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), a skilled Mandalorian warrior. While she was proficient with the Darksaber in Rebels, few fans anticipated her becoming a Jedi. However, much of Ahsoka season one focused on Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s former apprentice, training Sabine as her own Padawan. Henry Gilroy, a writer on Rebels, has stated he never envisioned Sabine becoming a Jedi and considers it a misstep in her character arc. He shared these thoughts on the Pod of Rebellion podcast, as reported by Gizmodo.
This wasn’t what we intended at all. We were concerned it would overshadow Ezra’s storyline and felt like a rehash of something we’d already done. The idea of Sabine becoming a Jedi felt unnecessary, considering she’s already such a skilled and unique warrior. I wasn’t involved in the Ahsoka series, so I was surprised by this direction. What I appreciate about the Darksaber storyline is that you don’t need to be a Jedi to embody Jedi principles – that’s the more important aspect, rather than suddenly having Sabine use powerful Force abilities when she has no prior experience.
Dave Filoni initially didn’t plan for Sabine to become a Jedi in Rebels, but he later changed his mind. Perhaps he preferred to explore her training in a story where Ezra Bridger wasn’t heavily involved. This approach aligns with how many fans reacted to Sabine suddenly learning to use the Force, as Henry Gilroy has expressed. It remains to be seen whether the second season of Ahsoka will demonstrate why Sabine becoming a Jedi was the right decision, both for Gilroy and the audience.
