Eric Dane, the popular actor best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, sadly passed away on February 19th at the age of 53. He had been fighting ALS, a serious disease, since being diagnosed in 2025. In his final weeks, he worked with the AI company ElevenLabs on a special project to save a recording of his voice, hoping his daughters, Billie (16) and Georgia (14), could continue to hear it in the future.
Rebecca Gayheart Dane, the widow of Dane, described the experience of recreating his voice as both time-sensitive and profoundly emotional for their family. She explained that Dane was eager to complete the project because he was losing his ability to speak, making communication increasingly difficult. Hearing the synthesized version of his voice was incredibly moving, bringing everyone in the room to tears. Her daughters were amazed, saying it sounded exactly like him – a perfect replication of his voice.
ElevenLabs has promised to make its voice restoration technology available for free to people with similar neurological conditions. This is part of a larger effort to help one million individuals who have lost their speech reconnect with family and friends.
Gayheart Dane intends to champion this cause in memory of her late husband, who deeply appreciated the power of voice in sharing stories. She stated, “He really understood how meaningful having a voice was.”
Eric Dane is well-known for his role as Dr. Mark Sloan, or “McSteamy,” on the popular TV show Grey’s Anatomy. He later surprised audiences with a powerful and nuanced performance as Cal Jacobs in the HBO series Euphoria, demonstrating his versatility as an actor. After being diagnosed with ALS, he became a passionate advocate for the disease, working to secure funding for research and openly sharing his experiences to help others understand it.
The actor had several projects nearing completion that his fans are excited about. He’ll be in the next season of Euphoria, which will premiere on HBO on April 12th. He also finished filming a thriller called Family Secrets, which is currently being edited, and appeared in an episode of the TV show Brilliant Minds. Plus, his memoir about living with ALS, Book of Days: A Memoir in Moments, will be published by Maria Shriver’s publishing company, The Open Field.
