‘Really didn’t know’: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice Director Burton Considered Quitting Filmmaking After Making 2019’s Dumbo

As a devoted admirer of Tim Burton’s enchanting and darkly captivating cinematic universe, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of appreciation for his resilience and dedication to storytelling. His journey has been nothing short of a testament to the power of passion and the magic that can be woven from the depths of one’s soul.

Even the most accomplished individuals like Tim Burton, a well-known director, encounter periods of self-doubt and low points in life, despite their impressive work. In fact, he almost walked away from filmmaking before his Netflix series Wednesday. Yet, the upcoming movie Beetlejuice Beetlejuice reignited his enthusiasm and made him reconsider his decision.

The film director shared with Variety his thoughts about being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on September 3, expressing that following his work on Disney’s 2019 live-action version of Dumbo, he reached a pivotal juncture in his career.

To be frank, following the release of Dumbo, I found myself at a crossroads. I had always thought that would be my swan song, the perfect ending to a remarkable career. Perhaps I could’ve retired, or ventured into something new – but certainly not animation again, I believed, with a chuckle.

Personally speaking, I must admit that the upcoming Netflix movie served as a source of inspiration for me, fueling my passion and driving me to excel at my craft even more. In the midst of working on budget Hollywood productions or any film project, I’ve found myself occasionally having to relinquish my personal views, which can unfortunately lead to feeling somewhat detached from oneself.

In the upcoming movie, Tim Burton is collaborating once more with Jenna Ortega, who portrays Wednesday, as she takes on the role of Lydia Deetz’s daughter, a character originally played by Winona Ryder, in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Michael Keaton once again takes on his renowned character, while Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder, aged 52, also return for the sequel. Joining them are fresh faces like Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe who round out the supporting cast.

During the five-year period from Dumbo’s release to Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton had a significant break in directing films. Since his debut with Pee-wee’s Big Adventure in 1985, he has been consistently working on film projects.

As a connoisseur of unique lifestyles, I’m often recognized for my role in introducing the captivating allure of goth culture – a subculture steeped in dark and enigmatic themes that emerged in the late 70s – to the vibrant canvas of American filmmaking. Tim Burton, if you will, is renowned for his masterful creations in gothic horror and fantasy cinema. His work has earned him a multitude of prestigious accolades such as an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award, with additional nominations including two Academy Awards nods and three BAFTA Award nominations.

For the very first time, the intriguing movie “Beetlejuice” will debut at the prestigious Venice Film Festival on August 28. Following this, you’ll be able to catch it in cinemas as of September 6.
