READING RAINBOW Returning with Mychal the Librarian Hosting

For more than 23 years, the TV show Reading Rainbow, with LeVar Burton as host, inspired a genuine love of reading in many children. Now, this beloved and educational PBS series is being brought back. This couldn’t be happening at a more important moment, considering that reading skills have been declining among young children recently. While Burton won’t be returning as host, unfortunately, the creators have found an excellent new person for the job. Our new host is Mychal Threets, a TikTok star and strong supporter of public libraries, also known as Mychal the Librarian. We learned about this news from the team at Bookriot, and you can see the announcement video below:

Based on the short preview, the new series seems to be sticking with what worked in the original – and that’s probably a good thing! It appears several well-known actors will be featured, including The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Ebon Moss-Bachrach, along with John Legend, Adam DeVine, Gabrielle Union, and others. However, the biggest question for many of us is whether the classic theme song will return. It’s impossible to think of Reading Rainbow without immediately remembering the lyrics “Butterfly in the sky….I can go twice as high!”

The original Reading Rainbow first aired in 1983 on PBS, and continued on PBS Kids until November 2006. Similar to Sesame Street, the show was incredibly important in helping children learn to love reading and books. It’s easy to see why so many popular young adult series became successful during the years Reading Rainbow was on the air. We don’t know exactly when the new episodes of Reading Rainbow will be released, but it seems like a large portion of the season has already been filmed. We hope this marks the start of a long and successful run for this updated version of the cherished show.
