Ralph Fiennes Confirms His ’28 Years Later’ Character Will Play an Even Bigger Role in Sequels

The much-anticipated film titled “28 Years Later” isn’t set to release in theaters until June, but we’re already getting glimpses into what lies ahead for the series. In an interview with Empire, actor Ralph Fiennes and director Danny Boyle have shared some intriguing insights about Fiennes’ character, Dr. Kelson.

In the upcoming movie titled “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” directed by Nia DaCosta in 2026, his part is significant, but it’s expected to expand significantly in the sequel, as he’s not just a key figure, but a central one.

Fiennes characterizes Dr. Kelson as an individual with an unconventional perspective on life: “He has some rather unusual ideas about the world, and I believe viewers will initially make assumptions about him but be intrigued to find out more.

Boyle commented: “He makes a significant entrance in the sequel, resolving all questions about his intentions and actions.

Approximately thirty years have passed since the initial spread of the “rage” virus, as depicted in the film “28 Days Later“. In this post-apocalyptic setting, a select few survivors find themselves confined within stringently guarded isolation zones.

A community lives on a secluded island, accessible only through a closely monitored causeway connecting it to the larger continent. The situation becomes tense when an explorer returns from the mainland, unearthing startling revelations concerning both the contaminated populace and fellow refugees.

Earlier hints from Fiennes indicated that the movie revolves around a young lad seeking a physician for his sick mother. Their trek across breathtaking northern English scenery is fraught with peril, as infected individuals lurk in every corner. Eventually, they encounter Dr. Kelson, who may appear peculiar initially but ultimately proves to be a positive influence.

Screenwriter Alex Garland describes the upcoming trilogy as being more expansive in terms of narrative compared to the original movie. “It’s quite narratively ambitious,” Garland disclosed. “Danny and I recognized this. We attempted to simplify it, but its inherent structure seemed best suited for a trilogy.

28 Years Later boasts an impressive ensemble of talents such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Alfie Williams, Jack O’Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding. The film is scheduled to debut on the big screen on June 20th, and its sequel, titled 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be released on January 16, 2026.
