Rachel Zegler Is Reportedly Eyed to Star in Disney’s Upcoming ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ Project

Disney Plus is preparing a contemporary reimagining of “The Phantom of the Opera,” with a focus on appealing to older teenagers. Rumor has it that Rachel Zegler, recognized for her performances in West Side Story and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, is being looked at for the part of Christine, the young soprano who finds herself captivated by the enigmatic Opera Ghost.

However, it’s unclear if she’s already in talks or just on the studio’s radar.

In the forthcoming film, referred to as “Phantom“, takes the helm as director, that’s none other than Kenny Ortega, famed for his work on High School Musical and The Descendants. Staying true to the original tale, Ortega’s rendition follows the story of Erik, a disfigured musical prodigy residing beneath the Paris Opera House, who becomes smitten with Christine and orchestrates her meteoric rise to fame.

Over time, “The Phantom of the Opera” has undergone numerous interpretations. The most renowned is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway musical, which spanned from 1988 to 2023. Other significant renditions include the 1989 horror version starring Robert Englund and the 2004 film directed by Joel Schumacher, featuring Gerard Butler, Emmy Rossum, and Patrick Wilson.

With her history in music from “West Side Story” and her forthcoming character in Disney’s “Snow White,” Rachel Zegler appears perfectly suited for the role. If the whispers are accurate, we might hear an official announcement shortly.
