As a devoted fan who has followed R. Kelly’s career since his “I Believe I Can Fly” days, it is heart-wrenching to witness the turmoil that has engulfed his personal life and family. The recent revelations by his daughter Buku (Abi) in the docuseries Karma: A Daughter’s Journey are both gut-wrenching and enlightening.
In the latest two-part docuseries “Karma: A Daughter’s Journey” on TVEI Streaming Network, R. Kelly’s daughter, Buku (26 years old), is pushing back against assertions that her views about her father are a result of brainwashing by her mother, Andrea Kelly. Previously, in 2019, a source close to the R&B artist told TMZ that he felt his daughter had been “brainwashed” by her mother. This statement came as the musician was dealing with sexual abuse allegations following the release of the Surviving R. Kelly documentary.
Abi had called her father a “monster” back then.
In the series Karma, Abi (formerly known as Joanne Kelly) states that she finds it unbelievable when he implies that her mom has brainwashed them. She clarifies that her father understands why they can’t have the close relationship they would’ve preferred. Abi is astonished by her father’s expectation of a normal relationship given that he subjected their mother to severe mental and emotional distress.
Andrea, Abi’s mother, was wedded to Kelly from 1996 until 2009. She publicly accused him of abuse in a TV appearance on The View back in 2018.
In the documentary series now available for streaming, Abi, a talented musician, expresses her feelings by stating, “I genuinely believed I wouldn’t see my mother again.” She then goes on to challenge her father’s claims that she is ‘brainwashing’ them, saying, “You know full well what you did. It’s hard for me to understand how anyone, especially him, could deny the impact of those actions on us.” Abi expresses her frustration that her father continues to assert something they all know is untrue as unfair.
Currently, R. Kelly is serving two overlapping prison terms. In February 2023, he received a 20-year sentence for child pornography and enticing minors for sexual activities. A year prior to that, he was given a 30-year sentence related to racketeering and sex trafficking charges stemming from New York. Due to these sentences, the artist known for “The Ignition (Remix)” won’t be eligible for release until 2045.
In another part of the documentary series, as stated by People, Abi alleges that she was a victim of sexual abuse by her father around the ages of 8 or 9. She initially disclosed this incident to her mother in the year 2009 when she was approximately 10 years old.
In the show, Abi expresses, “He meant the world to me. For quite some time, I refused to accept that such an event transpired. It never crossed my mind that someone as close to me could have been capable of hurting me, regardless of their character.
In response to statements made by Abi, Kelly’s lawyer, Jennifer Bonjean, disputed these allegations, stating that her client is the individual who faces more investigations regarding child sexual abuse than anyone else on Earth. She added that if there was any truth to his daughter’s accusations, they would have been included in his charges during court proceedings.
As a devoted admirer, I must express my disagreement with the creators of the documentary where Abi bravely shared her story. Unlike what should have been done, they did not make an attempt to contact Kelly or his team, giving him the chance to refute the accusations.
